My DVD rw broke 2 days ago and since I have dell warranty, they replaced one for me. However, the replacement was not the same dvd rw drive as the one that broke. Can someone tell me which one was better?

The one that broke: NEC ND-6650A slim 8x DVD+/-RW
Here is the link for the specs: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P95394/en/specs.htm

Here is the replacement: Philips SDVD8820

Somehow, I get the feeling that the replacement was inferior to the original one.

I am not sure how the 2 drives compare. You should double check that any of your CDs or DVDs will burn in the new drive. Not all media is compatibe with all drives. If not then call them back and demand the NEC.

I have the Sony, and it would not burn on my media. I have read others with problems with the Sony.

I have heard all good about the NEC, and have not heard as much, but all good on the Philips.

At this point, they are all $50-$60 parts, so, they are not really trying to shaft you, it just depends what they have laying around.
