Make sure that your DVD drive is set to DMA mode and not PIO mode. You can do this through your device manager. Instructions:

Amber,
thank you for your quick reply,,, I still have not resolved the issue.
the link you provided with instuctions was detailed but the following screen shot may assist you more.
Thnk u 4 ur help -
Okay. That is actually a common problem - not sure whether you should blame dell or Microsoft. On some laptops, you have to uninstall the device in your device manager and reboot. Right click on the secondary IDE and select uninstall. Reboot, and XP/Vista should detect it as new hardware and update the drivers.
Alternatively, you might be able to find an updated driver for your laptop as support.dell.com. The driver you need is for you cd/dvd drive and will be located in the removable drive category if Dell has a driver for your cd/dvd drive. -
Start > Run... > regedit
Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete both UpperFilters and LowerFilters in right window.
Close Registry Editor.
Reboot.
Now set DMA mode for your DVD drive by Amber's directions. -
try one thing,
disable your wireless network card and see if it does the same thing.
I have found that when my wireless card is searching for a network it will do that exact same thing -
Amber,,,, thank you, the solution was to uninstal/instal the IDE Secondary; as it was locked in PIO mode...
Thnx ur a star -
I have the same problem with a TSSTCorp DVD\CDRW drive. I'm not exactly sure when it began, but perhaps when or around the time that I installed my HP Smartscan printer, about three months ago. I purchased my Dell 3000 Dimension, WinXP Pro SP2, in March '05, and it's still under warranty.
The DVD video flow is fairly smoothe, showing only very faint flickers with the stuttering.
A Dell tech rep took me to the IDE ATAPI Secondary, Device "1" (as opposed to Device "0") through the Properties of the drive via My Computer. There, the "PIO" mode is engaged, and there is no changing this to any other setting!
Also, there doesn't seem to be any driver update for this drive on the web.
Exactly what *IS* this "PIO" mode?
Before I should allow Dell to replace the DVD combo drive, I really would like to try harder (and make them try harder!) to tweak/adjust any settings that might make a difference. I won't allow Dell to push me into a full restore, either. They are so quick with that as a resolution! It really drives (no pun intended) me up the wall!
Dell's tech rep had me download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack 3.5.2 Full version from http://www.codecguide.com/, saying that it would update codec files that are used by Windows Media Player and any other DVD player. (I have WMP 11 and an outdated version of PowerDVD.) However, it made no difference. The stuttering continues to occur with any DVD software application.
Does anyone know of any settings I should be sure to try to tweak/adjust? Perhaps some system setting, perhaps even in the BIOS, that corresponds with the DVD software applications generically and that would impact the playback speed or that otherwise interfaces with the DVD software? Or, do I also need to "uninstall/install" the IDE Secondary? If so, does that involve going into the computer case and detaching/attaching it? Or is it simply removing it from the Device Manager and rebooting? -
Thanks Amber! I checked & PIO had been locked in. My stuttering occurred all of a sudden after many moons of all DVDs playing fine with my preferred player JetAudio Basic. I changed some settings in JA to no avail. I tried PowerDVD & it seemed to correct the stuttering after awhile, but not necessarily for the entire remainder of the movie. I just DLed a PowerDVD upgrade from Dell & it seems to play a test DVD ok. But I intend to try your method to reset the DMA available, at least to see if doing so corrects the stuttering with JA.

thanks a million, this helped me out with my new Lenovo laptop. I don't know why it would ship like this? To most people it would seem like a defective laptop and it would cost time and money for Lenovo to ship back a replacement. Very strange, but thanks again.
