Have you updated your graphic drivers. I had a similar problem with my desktop, and installing new drivers sorted. Hope this helps.

What brand is your DVD drive? You can look it up in the Device Manager.

You probably need to change from PIO to DMA mode on your dvd drive. To do this:
    1. Go to your device manager (right click on my computer-->properties-->hardware tab-->device manager).
    2. Double click on the IDE section to expand it
    3. Right click on the secondary IDE channel and select properties
    4. Goto the second tab called Advanced Settings
    5. Set transfer mode to DMA for Device 0
    6. Click okay and reboot

Okay. Right click on the Secondary IDE and select Uninstall. Then reboot, and XP will detect it and install the proper drivers. From what I've seen, it usually will set DMA mode automatically when this is done, but it is always best to check.
