This is the first real problem I've had with the laptop. I installed XP today, and right when I inserted the installation disc, the drive started making a terrible vibrating/loud noise. It started making the noise even before I restarted Vista to start the reformat so I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem. Just to make sure, I popped in a music cd after XP was up and running and it wasn't making any noise. I then decided to pop another sofware cd in to see if that would make any difference and sure enough, it started making the sounds again. I called dell and talked to technical support and I was told to send in the laptop, as the DVD drive is not something they allow customers change without voiding warranty. This is so frustrating since I will be without my laptop for 5-8 days! Anyone else have this problem?

Even I am facing similar problem.
After a long wait that looked like an eternity, I got my hands on the lovely piece of art yesterday. I was enjoying playing with it until I tried the Slot load optical drive. It just doesn't works
I tried software CD/DVD, the Vista DVD provided with Dell and even a blank DVD but all it did was making a crappy noise like some F1 race is going on :(
And the problem doesn't ends here. I could have tolerated the sound for some time but the Drive doesn't even reads the disks properly, It just keep reading them, and when I try to eject the disk the machine just hangs. The only solution to come out of it is then to restart the machine.
Please help, what to do? I am already exhausted with the delay in delivery by the Pre-Sales ppl and now I am afraid of the same with After-Sales.

Ya Dell had some issues with the Slot Drives for a while and I heard that it even stopped production for a while.Hopefully all should be well by now.

    Hey guys,

I had my Studio 15 for about half a year now and I never had any problems until recently when I tired to install a game and that's when I heard that loud noise everybody has. Although when I put a CD in or a DVD, the noise isn't there but it doesn't read the disk and when I open 'My Computer' it says that there's 0GB of data on the disk.

Also, another problem I've been having with the slot-load drive is when I turn on my laptop it makes the sound as if it was trying to eject a CD from the drive even though it's empty and the eject light stays on as if I was pressing it. Even though it stops after a while it really bothers me.

I guess I'll have to send it in but I don't want to since I need my laptop for my work. :(

Good luck to the rest of you.

I have a dell Studo 1535 with the slot loading dvd/cd reader/writer. I've made sure my drivers are all up to date.
About a month after playing with it, I've experienced the same motorboat noise. The problem is, its unpredictable. Its usually with reading or writing CDs, but sometimes dvds.
And the problem doesn't end there.
I often have trouble burning dvds without errors (DVD decrypter or Power ISO). Usually it will completely burn the dvd's but fail on verification.
I'm pretty convinced its a hardware issue with the drive.
I got this laptop at best buy with the service plan and haven't returned it yet, because I'm trying to get it to happen repeatably. (I can just imagine going in there to explain it to one of those service people and have them tell me the drive is working just fine after one simple test).

Anyone find any thoughts or ideas?

i have talk to the dell tech.they told me that they will change the dvd drive as soon as they get a confirmation from me. the main thing is that they told me they will not replace a my dvd drive with a new one instead they will replace it with a refurbished dvd drive.

so my question is that how well is refurbished parts compare to new manufactured parts. plz a give a small tech details.

and plz also suggest me if let them change the dvd drive with refurbshied one.

    thx in advance.

Refurbished parts are just as good as new. Dell inspects them and makes any repairs necessary before sending them off as replacements. They're not going to send you a part they know is faulty. It's a way for them to save money by not throwing out parts that are still good, and also lets them avoid having to send out brand new parts as replacements.

Unless you physically look at the manufacturing date sticker, you'll never notice the difference between a refurbished part and a brand new one. I'm currently running my Studio 1535 with a refurbished motherboard, DVD drive, media panel, and keyboard.

Lol to be honest, it's Windows, you should expect the unexpected. :p I've come to learn that most software problems are a result of Windows Vista itself, either due to a fault during the installation process or driver problems. I've never known a Vista installation to be completely problem free, whether it be a failed process on startup or a random BSOD. I enjoy Vista nonetheless.

My desktop computer has been using Vista with zero issues I can think of, for nearly two years. ;)

I am talking about laptops but you should get thousands of dollars if you ever sell your desktop because it is literally "Built for Windows Vista." Hahaha. :p

To be fair, this Studio 15 hasn't really had any Vista-related issues. The few problems it's had have been entirely independent of the operating system.

Understand that I am not bashing Vista, which seems to be common on here, I really like it and I will never go back to XP. If you've never had any problems then you must be extremely lucky. All OSes have their problems as you know. I hated XP with it's File Sharing hell. Fortunately Windows Vista solved all file sharing problems that I encountered. (Thank you Microsoft) I have not yet had any problems with this Inspiron 1420 and Vista but my Studio 15, my dads XPS 730, my brothers Dimension E520, and my cousins Inspiron 1520 have all had their share of random process failures and BSODs. God knows why.

I'm not accusing you of bashing Vista. And I know all operating systems, including all iterations of Windows, have their issues. I've had plenty of experience. :p

On a brighter note I have managed to install Windows 7 x64 without any problems. Shocklingly I did not have to install any drivers except the display and card reader. If I continue to use this without problems I just might buy it when the final version is released. It seems to use a lot less resources considering I do not have 4GB of RAM.

I'm sure upgrade pricing will be moderately less expensive, though.

I forgot about the upgrades. If they are anything like Vista's current upgrade prices I might be more willing to purchase it.

God, I hope the Studio 1555's don't have the slot loading grinding noise... :\

Anyone have problems with their drives in the 1555?

This problem happened with me yesterday - it is so frustrating. More so, because this is the second time that this problem has occurred in nine months of ownership. I will send it back, though being in the middle of exams, I will need my laptop for the next five weeks - but frankly, I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm going to have to buy an external writer before too long.

If Dell don't buck up their ideas, this'll be the first and last of their laptops that I own. I'm not happy losing it every few months when the drive goes wrong - I paid £500 for this kind of service. What a rip-off.

Well, my drive in my Studio 15 also died on me. It is no longer able to read DVDs and ejects it back out.

I am now looking if I can buy a new disk from the market and replace it myself in my laptop. Not sure what model I should be looking for though yet :(

    Which Studio 15 do you have? 1535, 1536, 1537, 1555, or 1557?

Also, if you still have warranty coverage, this is something that Dell will replace for you.
