hi there !!!
i am new to this site was wondering if someone can help me buy a laptop. need some clarification on dell.
- does dell make glossy screens like ASUS, Sony, LG etc...
- does dell "TrueLife" mean that the laptop will have glossy screen and do all dell laptops come with TrueLife screens.
- i am planning to get the best screen dell has to offer "UXGA", will that only enhace the screen resolution, or will the screen look shiny physically like the other screens coming in the market now.
would appericiate if someone can answer the queries.
thanx

They do offer glosy displays in some models, like the 700m. But you can't combine ultra high resolution with glossy display.

from what ive read around the inet about dells UXGA "truelife" screens, it seems these panels have a sparkling effect on white and very very light colors. my friend has an i9300 with the WUXGA+ "truelife" screen and it was a bit glossy, which i dont like at all, especially in an office environment.
The thing i really liked about it was its desktop real estate, a lot of space to work with, but thats about it. As for gaming (my main thing) i opted for the cheaper of the two selections when i ordered my i9300, because i am an avid gamer, and i go for clarity, so having a lower native resolution means i get more fps when running my games at the native resolution. the higher the native res. is the more you have to lower the resolution in order to maintain a good video sequence (no choppiness or the like), and the higher the ghosting will be.
just my $.02 -
so you would suggest the non truelife screen?

I have the truelife screen I like it very much but it is glossy so this means that at work it matters how I open the screen. By this I mean that if you open it at the wrong angle it will reflect the ceiling lights much like a class of water will if looked at the right way.
Other than this and the fact that in the very bright light outside it is a bit tough to read I really like it and I think the glossy screen is well worth the tradeoff. By the way I use mine for program development meaning that I spend most of my time looking at text not graphics though for fun I watch movies on it and tv all the time. I have the media center edition which by the way is the best $30 I ever spent!
For what it is worth I now use Bluetooth all the time as well as the wireless networking too glad I also bought both of those. -
well my point was it matters which scenario you are going to be in, for gaming i would highly recommend the non truelife, but for other things, like programming, webpage development, graphic design, and productivity stuff im sure you would rather have the truelife, simply for its higher native resolution.
either way, the truelife has the gloss for a fact, i havent received my i9300 yet (comes in 3 days!!!) so i cannot comment on that yet, but i had an HP ZD7k for the past year and it had a 17in WXGA+ screen and it was perfect, minimal glare (by a longshot, compared to other laptop panels available at the time) and a very good response time. -
Usually people that like the glossy screens on other laptops will like the truelife. We had a thread about this a couple of months ago, and most of the users that had truelife or a glossy screen love it, and the ones that didn't, wish they had a glossy screen. There has been complaints about the sparkle, but that was when the 9300 was first released. In the last couple of months, the sparkle complaints have died down.

For software development it seems to be that the wider the better. Microsoft never met a toolbar or tree they didn't like! And on both sides of the screen now. -
Like JJD said, I would go to Best Buy or somewhere and look at the screens. You'll be able to tell which ones are glossy by the reflection.
I really wish I would have gotten the glossy screen, but after reading the reviews I was little hesitant to try it. The non-truelife color seems an off-white, and the angles are not the best for viewing. The non-truelife is not the best screen in the world for playing dvds or games, but at least you don't have a reflection either. -
for Battlefield 2 i use 1024x768 on my desktop and i dont have my new i9300 to tell you what resolution it plays at, but ill be sure to post. -

hey guyz !!!
thanx 4 tht. the problem i dont have a dell outlet in the town i am living in australia (adelaide). so i cant actually compare the screens - the ones with true life w/t the ones without.
my only concern is that like all the things u can configure to make a laptop, the autralian dell site does not give you an option to get a true life screen. the best you can do in the screen option is increase the resolution.
i guess my understanding is that they only make true life screens for their 9300 model only which is 17'' inches. all others are just the normal mat finish - no gloss. can someone tell me if there is an option of a true life screen in a dell 6000. -
Hi I'm also from adelaide and just ordered my i6000d today. About the screen your guess is right. You can't get Truelife screen on i6000 (as far as I know) . But you can always call up dell about it. I didn't want a truelife screen so didn't ask them about it. :decision:
DESPERATELY need help !!!
