It was worth a try :)

    My email ...

I have paid a lot of money for this laptop (XPS 1730) and I need someone to answer this question since every time DELL is contacted the question is sidestepped. Please refer this letter to someone who can actually answer the question. Will i be able to upgrade my current 8700 graphics card with a new more powerful card (ie 8800) in the future. Me and many other people have spent to much money on this laptop not to at least get an honest answer.

    DELLs response

Thank you for contacting XPS Email Technical Support

We have reviewed your concern below, and whilst we certainly understand your point of view, this information is not available to us. It is very difficult for us to make assumptions, or guesses whether or not a graphics card, which has not even been released yet will be available for the XPS M1730. When and if Dell, decides to release an 8800 series on the XPS M1730, that information will be available on our Dell website, and will likely be posted within the Dell Community Forums. ( http://www.dellcommunity.com/ )

Sorry I could not provide a concise answer, however we cannot speculate about options which are not there yet.

If at any point you require immediate assistance, we invite you to contact us at 1-800-232-8544 to speak with a XPS Technical Support Representative. Alternatively, you may also visit http://www.dell.com/chat to chat with a live XPS Online Technical Support Representative.

    Thank you for choosing Dell!

    Regards,
    Devin

    What did you expect?

Alienware announced the availability of the 8800 to coincide with their new laptops at the launch event. I understand why they released that info because the systems are not ready for sale yet, so they can say whatever they want because you can't order it yet (I believe those systems won't be out untill the end of January anyway).

With the 1730, it is currently being sold and they are not yet ready to announce anything - yet (when they are ready, they will). Dell doesn't want another part-shortage fiasco, so I understand why they are being cautious.

I believe 100% that it is just a matter of time before the 8800 shows up in the 1730. After all it is their top-end system designed specifically for gaming. It makes no sense for them not to include it.

Of course it sounds sketchy. It's nothing but speculation at this point.

"Sorry I could not provide a concise answer, however we cannot speculate about options which are not there yet."

Can't get any more honest than that answer right there.

Dont you think that if they got the 8800 ready for the xps , they would certainly launched the original 1730 directly with one of those?? (8800m cards) instead of the poorly 8700??? I guess the upgrade to the 8800m is very far from now... sad but true... and those who are still wating for the 8800m to order their xps we'll have to wait even more....

Which just reinforces the facts that a) you should order a laptop when/if you need it right away rather than waiting for something which may never occur, and b) if one company doesn't have what you want, when you want it, let your money do the talking and spend it elsewhere.

I'm just personally tired of reading about people whining and moaning "Why doesn't Dell have this?" or "Why did Dell do that?".

If you don't like it, no one is forcing you to buy from Dell. If you don't like what they have to offer (which Dell is obviously offering for a reason), then buy something else.

If Dell releases a laptop and no one buys it because the specs are ****ty, do you think Dell take notice? Sure they will! LET YOUR MONEY DO THE TALKING!

Why do you think Dell came out with the m1530? People FLOCKED to the m1330 and they got feedback that people would also like a 15" version. Dell would have been stupid not to respond with the m1530.

As for the 1730, if it doesn't have the specs you want (m8800), here's a novel idea, DON'T BUY IT! Send the message to Dell. Maybe they'll get the hint and offer an upgrade for it in the future (don't expect it and be pissed off if they don't however). Buy it because you want/need it, or buy something else which better suits you.

Look, Dell 'promised' a graphics upgrade path in the future. What do you think you can upgrade SLI 8700's to? Obviously 8800's - because nothing more power exists - yet... Just be patient, I wouldn't be surprised if Dell and nVidia are working on it right now.

Khris - NAILED it right on the head. I hear ya bro I'm sick of hearing people ***** "I shouldn't have gotten a Dell" because they had some stupid ass problem. If their aware of all the problems, why do they keep buying them? People just love to stur **** and ***** and whine.

Dell has been selling machines for years, I think they know a thing or two about what their doing, considering everywhere you go, schools, stores, homes you likely have a 80% chance of seeing something with a Dell label.

Heres an idea - everyone stop speculating and asking if the 1520/1720/1525/1526/Your mom/1730 etc will get a m8800.. Heres the short answer, NO ONE ****ING KNOWS.

No Inspiron is gonna get a cutting edge graphics card because that's the consumer line. If you can pick up something with godly power for half price why buy a premium gaming machine?

And obviously their flagship gaming machine will get top of the line graphics. It'd be completely stupid. No wait, it won't be stupid it'd be the biggest ****ing joke in computer history. Right now the 8700 SLI is the best you can get, SO STOP ASKING IF IT'S GONNA GET BETTER WHEN NOTHING BETTER IS ON THE MARKET!

Heres a simulation of the stupidity of asking if a machine is gonna get something that doesn't exist yet.

"Will the 1420 get dual quad cores? Because I heard Intel are working on them!"

Frankly if I were Dell I'd release a completely new system with new cutting edge parts instead of upgrading current machines. So all the enthusiasts *****es run out and buy the new one.

Ta-da..theres the logic to the industry - now enough of the stupid speculations and questions.

By the way, asking CS or techs at any company, if they know what the head people are doing is like going to Area 51 and asking the Camo dudes what they're doing in that top secrete army base. Roughly and accurately true at the same time.

IF you people have an idea, or think dell should do something a cretin way? Go on Idea storm or the community forms and post you're brilliant idea, because you obviously know so much.
