4P servers in particular, since Intel is lousy at those (no onboard memory controller, no HyperTransport) and Conroe/Merom/Woodcrest does nothing to change that. Companies that buy 4P servers are customers that you really, REALLY don't want to lose, so Mikey apparently decided Dell had lost enough accounts and finally capitulated. If Dell doesn't offer 2P Opteron servers they'll probably sell an abnormally large number of lower-end Opteron 4P machines to companies whose purchasing departments refuse to buy anywhere else (been there).

Dell's Alienware subsidiary sells AMD desktop and notebook CPUs. Today's announcement pretty much confirms why Dell really bought Alienware.

Mr. Michael Dell failed to mention on whether they will be using AMD on anything other than the servers...which could mean he has a surprise in store. Intel's stocks are dropping, while AMD is doing quite well. Dell is also planning to invest more into customer service and price cuts, even though his profit margin will then decrease( www.forbes.com)

Well, if Intel's new Woodcrest server chips deliver on what they promise, it is unlikely that their contract with AMD will last long... unless AMD gets competitive on price/performance. I'm excited for AMD's K8L series, but I haven't heard much about any massive performance increases. I love competition... Go-Go-Gadget free market!
