First of all let me state that I am not an anti-DELL fanatic or anything of the kind. I am actually patiently waiting the Studio XPS line before deciding on my new laptop.

    Yet today I found this...
HP USA site, HDX18 configuration site
    T9400 to QX9300 125.00 USD

DELL USA site, M6400 configuration site
    T9400 to QX9300 770.00 USD

DELL Swiss site, M6400 configuration site
T9400 to QX9300 1283 Swiss francs = 1136 USD

My chin hit the floor!! We are talking about exactly the same thing that gets 600% more inside the same market and 900% between markets!!!

OMG!!!!

    P.S.
The fact that the one is a "consumer" model while the other a "professional" one can at no point be held as an excuse! I agree that professional models are supposed to get better build/overall quality and such, yet we are talking about single pieces of equipment here!!!!

    P.S.2
The difference between countries is known and understandable. Different laws, different taxes etc... BUT!!! 900%!!!!! It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy off the roof!!!! Especially since we are not getting payed 900% more!!!!

EDIT: There are some of the replies in this post arguing that it is not DELL overpricing but HP making a very nice offer. Whichever the case the price difference is just huge!! and I am not seeing HP getting bankrupt by offering CPUs below cost...
Anyway I just got the word overpricing out of the post but the fact remains. The same CPU has a 600% or 900% (choose your version) higher price tag...

OMG, we hope the OP never finds out about www.alienware.com and www.falcon-nw.com. Someone hide them, quick!

Edit: And don't forget the RAM prices while you're at it.

No need to ridicule the OP.
He is comparing the price of a specific component which costs both HP and dell almost the same.
Even I have noticed this practice. Here in India, for one laptop ( vostro ) upgrade from intel 5870 processor to t8100 cost INR2200 whereas for a different laptop ( studio ) the same upgrade costs INR5600
Dell seems to charge whatever it seems fit and it's rarely worth it to customize a machine to our liking unless you want to pay through the roof

Come on! I know about both of them (Allienware and NW and a few more at the NW caliber) and as everyone can tell you, when you buy from them you know you will pay much more, no matter what.

These companies they do not fancy themselves as mainstream. On the contrary they advertise themselves as the brands that you can afford, when you can spend without caring! Especially NW... the top configuration option is chosen by clicking on a bunch of dollars underscored by the title "Bragging rights"!!!

If DELL wants to be that kind of company OK by me... But they do NOT adverise themselves as such.

that sounds like a error/glitch. the qx9300 alone is worth $1000+ when bought in a pack of 1000pcs from intel. looks like hps has done a mistake, so order urs before they realize the problem.

That's actually a good point. The T9400 is $316, the QX9300 is $1030, so the price difference is over $700.

HP's giving a pretty good discount to upgrade to the new quadcore.

Ya this doesn't seem to be them overpricing although Dell overprices a LOT of other things like it's old Santa Rosa platforms are the same price as people's faster and less power consuming Montevina.

Thanks for that information, however I have been aware for some time that value can be hard to find in the computer space. For example, I find it interesting that the smaller the notebook, the more the cost, until you get below 11-12 inches. What is the premium for underperforming hardware - its taking advantage of people who just think miniature is better, period.

My normal standby, Newegg, typically still has notebooks for sale from a year or two ago asking the same prices they did when they were new (and we know that just shouldn't be so).

To come to the defense of Dell, and trust me I never do, I wouldn't criticize the discrepancy until I had a clearer understanding of whether or not they end up using more expensive mainboards with more features or if they have to basically pay a higher price initially because they are early adopters / competing for supply with too many other vendors at the moment.

Maybe HP is simply willing to take a hit in the piggy bank in order to sell, sell, sell! Remember when the Dell studio came out, and right off the bat the stock configuration was pretty much awesome and HD screens were cheap? I think HP has one of the cheapest Blu-ray upgrades going at the moment right now too.

Thanks for the information. Now go to the apple store and take note of the 200% average markup for comparable hardware also! That is why I know for a fact that I would not have bought my current notebook without the 20% off coupon. Dell would have you think that you are getting a screaming deal, but I would tend to think that they want to advertise higher prices and use coupons to normalize for changes in hardware values. Plus, imagine what would happen if you saw falling prices everyday, and then suddenly, someone tries to pull a premium on you.

Ok and? HP is either overcharging for the T9400 or significantly discounting the QX9300. The M6400 is not even in the same class as the HP either.

the pricing on the new QX9300 cpu's are really all over the place. Some offer better pricing than others. Just wait a bit a prices will adjust to about the same.
