ok so my sister bought her dell inspiron 700m back in 2004. i went online to the dell site on her computer to check its default configurations and found that it came with 256 ram, however, when i check, it seems that the system only recognizes up to 238 ram and 238 is the number that keeps showing up. this is extremely troublesome cause im trying to install ubuntu but many problems keep occurring cause i need 256 ram for it.
is there any way i can get the 700mto recognize the full 256 ram?
also im thinking of upgraded the ram, would this ram be ok? it seems compatible but i want to be sure before i buy it : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820141207

    thanks in advance

in the bios, it shows 256 ram, but on the dxdiag window on xp, it should 238. and when i tried to run ubuntu again, this time just selecting "install inside windows", it says i only have 238 ram and i need 256 ram...wth..

The RAM to which you have linked will be compatible. The 700M has an integrated graphics card which is probably sharing (stealing) a little bit of your installed memory, thus causing the discrepancy between installed and recognized memory.

It would be a great idea to buy that ram, and maybe even a 1gb module instead. It will really give the laptop new life!
