Does someone know if I can upgrade easily the CPU in my Inspiron e1705. Currently it is running with a T2400 (core duo @1.86MHz) and I want to upgrade to a core 2 duo like a T7200.
Has someone knowledge about the performance gain and about the increased energy consumption?
-
Energy consumption will rise just a little bit, but the performance boost will be no more than 10-12% with all things considered (increased speed and new core design). IMHO it isn't worth it unless you need 64bit-ness.

Everything that night_2004 has said is true. In addition you will void your warranty. Don't bother. Replacing the CPU is not a terribly easy thing to do, especially on notebook computers. You will see very little/if any gain. Spend your money on more memory, a faster hard drive or put it in a savings account for the next computer.

Correction: Dell says you will *not* void your warranty:

Thanks for these infos.
So I will spend my money on an external HD, maybe eSATA.
In memory I am already at 2GB. -
Iceman0124 More news from nowhere
it wont totally void your warranty, "core" internal parts that have been upgraded by the user, cpu, video card etc will not be covered, damage to the system due to removal or installation of core components is also not covered. The above posters are right in the fact that it wont be worth the cost/effort/risk, the end result will be far from night and day, more like 9:30 am and 9:45 am

yes but it won't support AMD64 with the original core duo chip.
and the new 1720 doesn't support 1900x1200. -
Question: what is AMD?
Laptop is still running with the old cpu and it's running nicely. -
well, I've seen more than enough to assure me that this is a drop-in upgrade. the only problem is with the bios...apparently the a01 bios of the e1705 doesn't like the Merom Core2 duo chips. This is discussed...

but the chipset and pinouts are the same. Only the very latest and greatest Core2 chips are even ready for 965, the earlier ones are all 945. I don't know if that means that the lower core2 can't run in a 965 board (I doubt it, that would mean the chipset isn't backwards-compatible) but I see no reason not to do this upgrade later which is what I was worried about, therefore no reason to worry about upgrading right now.
Just make sure that you can get the cpus.
Even then you will still be limited to 2GB with the mb in the e1705. But at least you will be able to run 64-bit code on it. -
Glad the laptop is running nicely but this thread is now closed...old threads are not suppose to revived.
