    Hi !

I have just received my Dell Inspiron 1420 with the 14.1 glossy 1440*900 screen. Now, just as sooo many of other users - On white backgrounds - i find the screen to be a bit grainy. Have tried everything but have not been able to get rid of it.

    I have 2 options -
    1. Send it back and ask for a new system with the antiglare(matte) screen. Does anyone have this along with the grainy issue ?

    2. I can send it back and ask for a new system with the glossy again? Anyone who has got the bit grainy screen(only on white bg), have u been able to solve it?

Hope someone can Help! :( - sigh just when u think that DELL has undergone a transformation.

no, they send you a prepaid box and DHL picks it up and supplies you with what you need to pack it.

@ bratsood, its up to you mate! If you want a glossy screen, send back your current one, and ask for another glossy one, if you want a matte screen, send it back and ask for a matte screen!

@onlycurious, no you dont have to pay for return shipping unless you are returning it for a refund! If it is being returned for a replacement, they will pay for someone to collect it (I think the same applies for repairs, but im not 100% sure on that).

actually, i have been going through the steps to have my screen replaced and they'll only let you replace the part with something exactly like it. i asked for an upgrade to a WXGA+ and they said I couldn't

hmm..i just ordered the replacement with the same glossy screen. But i told them that i particularly dont want an AUO manufactured LCD panel . Judging from what everyone has - thats a manufacturer issue.

Well, let's just hope it all works out. Lol now im thinking if i shud upgrade from a 80gb hdd to a 120gb hdd. Vista is just eating up space. Just my normal apps...and i only have 35 gb free!!

    oh well...laptop woes!

Funny thing is Dell will keep offering credit until they are at the verge of breaking even with their cost.

    Happened to me :)

Hmm...I don't know about the credit part.

Actually, i just came across some ppl even having a problem of grainyness with the SEC screens too ?

Guys, what should i tell that lady? Should i call them back and tell them that i dont want both an AUO and a SEC panel ?! Lol

I have to say it... I'm getting a 1420 soon and this site made me paranoid about the grainy screens. Damn it! I'm getting a glossy at 1440x900, and I won't be able to return it. Crossing my fingers here...

Hmm...Man I have ordered my replacement - Even told them to fit in the LG panel or i wont accept it. But now came across somewhere that even the LG panels have it - Just lesser than the AUO/SEC's.
Also, i don't understand why - but ever since ive got this 1420 - my eyes are really paining. I have a lot of word processing and browsing work - Guys, is this glossy screen affecting you too ? Or is it because of the grainyness ?

I don't understand whether to again call them up and just tell them that i want the anti-glare one and get over with this glossy ****!

I know this is a 1420 thread, but I have the same grainy screen problem with my 1400 I just got. It's a SEC. I just got off the phone with tech support and the rep told me they only have one part # for that model, WK097. I explained to him about the different manufacturers and even the hardware ID in the device manager. He told me he didn't know anything about that and I could get it replaced but it would be the same manufacturer/they could not guarentee what manufacturer panel I would get. I see that some of you are getting replacements and specifying the LG pannel, and getting it. Can someone tell me how you do/did that? I figure they both take the same pannel with the same part number or ID. PS, the rep had an Indian accent if that has anything to do with it.

Personally, I don't think panel manufacturers can make a decent wxga + 1440 X 900 14". SEC can look ok but have really bad viewing angles. Auo.. yes can be very grainy. LG? I don't know if you can get an LG but that might be better. You might be better off returning/refunding and reordering the system with a regular wxga. I think you would be happy with that.

Does anyone even have a LG 14.1" WXGA+ 1440x900 Panel? Does LG even make it?

I keep seeing lots of people complain about grainy screens. How grainy are they? About a pixel. Ah.

The one I had was grainy.. but that did not bother me.. it also had the vasoline/sparkle effect where it looked like smeared grease on the screen..that was too much. I think if people really want a high res screen, they may have to accept a little graininess. If you have a severe grainy issue or the greasy/sparkle issue as well..you may want to go with a replacement. If you expect a perfect wxga + panel.. with zero grain.. you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. On a 14" panel, I think wxga may be a better option and easier on the eyes.

You may want to try one more replacement. IF that does not work you may want to think about returning/refunding before you get stuck with a screen you won't like.. After that you can reorder or try it with a lower res etc.. I personally got a refund after my second crap AUO screen since I was near the 21 day period for refunds. I figured if Dell could not fix it the second time, then forget it. I even said if the replacement was a SEC I would have been ok.. I sent the first in with SEC because of a crack in lid. Now I am glad the replacement did not have a SEC since the wxga LG I have now on my HP is brilliant.. I don't mind that res since the screen is perfect in every other way. I know some people have nice wxga + 15" screens but I have my doubts as to whether anyone makes a decent wxga + panel with decent viewing angles on a 14". I don't know if that exists.

I just saw a Dell XPS with a glossy screen 13.3 inches and it is absolutely brilliant. WTF cant DELL be consistent in the screen it provides in its range of laptops.

Anyway, i guess il just wait - ive told them like a million times that i want an LG. If that doesnt work out too, then i send that back and get a Matte screen. But i want a glossy screen :( And i don't like HP laptops much! I want an XPS...u gotta see it to believe it. It's nothing like the DELL we know!

I don't think such an animal exists. One poster mentioned a tech saying there is only one part number to order for those that have on site coverage on the 1420. I think SEC may be it with the AUO probably out of the mix.

    I didn't think it existed either :).

WK097 is an SEC one and I think that's the model that was mentioned. AUP WXGA+ panels are HORRIBLE. SEC (what I have now) is not too bad at all.

    Hi all,

Well, finally i got my replacement. And they put in a SEC lcd panel now. It's much much better than the grainy AUO....so i think ive decided on keeping it. it seems more like a scree now. I might say - I'm happy!

Well, lets see if any other problem comes up. For those, who get an AUO the first time, be sure to send it back and make DELL realize that we aint what they think we are!

    Peace out!
