so i been reading in here, and dam it's pretty enlightening. you guys are great, but so anyways back to my topic.
DOES ANYONE ACTUALLY KNOW HOW MUCH THE DELL INSPIRON 9300 IS GOING TO COST? (sorry for the caps, no pun intended) OR PERHAPS A GUESSTIMATE?
what would be the better thing to do? i was going to buy a Dell Inspiron 9200 (refurbished) but now i'm seeing that 9300 is now the new 9200. i would assume that the Dell Inspiron 9200 price should drop a tiny bit, but perhaps remain the same as the 9300 would just take it's place with a higher valued price.
please help me out, this will be my first laptop purchase and i would like to get it right the first time[ ]

We don't know, but the likely starting point would be $1500 or so.

I'm in the exact same situaton as you, except I already own the Inspiron 8600[ ]
I was tempted to purchase the 9200, but when the 9300 was announced, I decided to wait because I realised that it has several features worth waiting for such as the 533Mhz FSB and the PCI-Express graphic cards which are major improvements.[ ]
My personal feeling on what will happen is that the 9300 will outright replace the 9200 - why you ask? Because already here in Australia they have removed the 9200!![ ]
So now I don't have a choice - I just have to wait for the 9300 now!![:I] So be warned - get your 9200 now while you still can if you want it.
But my punt is that the 9300 when it comes out will be roughly the same as a high spec 9200 today so I'd wait if I was you.

Hmm...why does technology have to go by so fast? Get a 9300 next month when it'll probably come out, and next thing you know 9 months later we'll be at the dawn of dual-core notebooks. Its going to be the same curse that fell upon the 9200 owners, you get it, and not even a year in its outdated (and for the 9200, it isnt even half a year).

yeah, and then one waits ALL that time for what possibly may be the Inspiron 9400, and then, as law of tech advancement goes, probably around 3-5 months later you'll see something new, like notebook SLi or AMR, if it ever happens, but something big. Un-escapable. Unless you got mega dough and can dish out cash for every update that comes out, then you can escape this, but that would be in-efficient and pointless, a waste of money, and a lot of work transferring files from old pc to new pc, etc, which in that case means its unescapable.

Yep, there will always be someting bigger and better coming....[8)]
So it's just a case of figuring out what you like then biting the bullet and buying it... otherwise you will never buy![ ]

Exactly, you have to bite the bullet sometime or you will go nowhere.

dang, all this technology advancement is just pushing me away from buying a laptop [ !]
i'm so glad i didn't buy a laptop the beginning of this year, but dang the 9300 is probably gonna be around 9lbs huh? that's gonna be a lot of weight on my back, i'm glad i work out [B)]
HERE IS MY QUESTION?
does anyone ever buy REFURBISHED LAPTOPS? or know someone who has? are they just as good quality as NEW ones? i know that's why they call'em refurbished, they make it as if it was 'renewed' or whatever, but just wanting to know if there's some problems to refurbished or not, just curiousity.
THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO RESPONDED, I REALLY APPRECIATE IT. THIS IS GONNA BE MY FIRST LAPTOP, I CAN'T WAIT [ ]

Doesn't really matter, I don't think. I'm just here to learn more/help others. I like the 9200 (the picture thing on the left), but I don't have one. Nice place to keep up with latest new products too.

this is just a notebook, not a committment that will change your life forever. don't sweat the small stuff. if you need one to learn on, then time is money my friend. if you need one to game on, then buy an xbox and save yourself a wad of dough. if you need one to look cool at the cafe, buy an apple (or even better, buy some philosophy texts and ask deep, thought provoking questions).
realize that no matter what you buy, in 3 years it will start showing it's age. it will lack feature x,y, and z. it will be heavier, bulkier, slower, use more power, and turn in pathetic 3dmarks compared with the current products.

the 9300 will only have a 5-15% performance benefit on non-game applications. given that human perception is logarithmic and not linear, you will not be able to tell.
now, this isn't at the same cost. the 9300 will cost a bit more, use a bit more power (so a bit less battery time), and since the 9300 memory (ddrII) is new, it will be pricey to upgrade your ram. if you buy the 9200 you can use the cost difference to buy a better warranty or more ram.
notebooks age faster than desktops. 3 years is hard on a notebook. the batteries are good for 500 cycles. they are less upgradeable, and lag a desktop in processing and storage capacity (thus they are already like a desktop that is one year old). they take a beating everytime you transport them. let me tell you about my 5 year old notebook. it is a 10lb dell inspiron 7500 with a 650mhz processor (512MB of pc100) that multitasks between firefox, office, mysql, and eclipse with lots ungraceful 5 and 10 second "frozen screen" pauses.
<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>
yeah i realized i won't 'see or feel' the difference with an increase of 133mhz front side bus nor the increase in ram with ddr2, and dam it also sucks having to think about the ram cost if i ever do want to upgrade. also to think about, i really do care about battery life [B)] i'll definitely keep this in mind, i was gonna buy a refurbished anyways since i can't 'trust ebay with brand new products'[xx(] but since i'ma spend up to 1,500 or more, i'm definitely gonna go the safe way and i'll be able to purchase a longer term warranty (for those transporation beating)[]
but the biggest reason i want the i9300 is because of the PCI-E video card, and i heard you can upgrade that later too if you want (but i hardly doubt i would) (the thing is, i don't have a PCI-E slot on my desktop computer and i don't feel like spending money to buy a new motherboard)
well i appreciate your comments once again, it's getting me thinking on purchasing just a 9200 for the cheaper benefit and the fact the i9300 will become just 'another laptop' in like 3 years or so.

Well, sort of...The Inspiron 6000 has now been changed to allow the user to choose a non-integrated PCI-Express X300 card here in Australia, and will eventually have an option for an X800 [8D]

Yes, the upgrade to the X300 from the integrated graphics is an extra AUS$249 so I'd imagine it's even more for the X800 (when it is available).
p.s. Just found out that the Inspron 9300 release date here is 28 Feb.[ ]

Actually, this was written in another post, but the 6000 is available with the 64 or 128 mb x300 cards in USA now, if you go through the Small Business section. But unfortunately (this also was from another post), I don't think you will be able to fit a x800 into a i6000. Someone noted in another post that the card size is based on the MB value it has (I think), so I don't think you can fit a 256 mb MRX800 in a originally 128mb X300 slot. It might be possible though, I'm guessing, for the 6000 offers the 64 mb or the 128 mb, unless there are 2 different models one with a 64 mb motherboard and one with 128, or maybe the 64 is the same size as 128, I don't know. But you may be able to upgrade in either case, maybe to like an X600 or X700 with 128 mb, that might be possible.

anyone have a guess on how much battery life the i6000 and i9300 will have? with a PCI-E video cards and a faster processor, i'm assuming battery life will be a little less than it should be[B)]
