I have seen many people complaining about dents and uneven base when buything a NEW computer from DELL.

I actually have experienced that today when getting under warranty system exchange.

They built me a new Latitude XT, because the one I had burned out for some unknown reason.

Just receieved the replacement today, and I discovered dents on the 3 different places.

One deep dent on the left side of top cover.
Two Light dents on the bottom side of top cover.
Scratches on the bottom of hinge cover.

Also one of the magnets under the palm rest for holding the lid was lose. I hear clicking noise when closing the lid or place a ferrous metal over it!!

Magnets were weaker thean the one I had before. It wasn't holding the lid at all.

And for some weird reason, they put Windos Vista Basic logo label on the palmrest when it comes with Windows Vista Business Installed.

Now dell wants me to send it back for repair. Which will going to take another week to repair.

    NEVER BUYING DELL AGAIN!!!

must be luck of the draw or some exaggeration.....

bought 4 laptops from Dell over a 2 year period and up to recent, never a problem with shipping, customer service when i called, or the product i received....pristine and perfect

also never a hardware prob, bsod etc.

2 were from the outlet and i couldnt be happier, seem brand new

btw your replacement is a "refurb" and it happens, send it back/demand another one

Demand a refund/ another replacement? Say you don't want a repair and be adamant that you have the right to it. And if you have a good rep they'll allow you to. Also I don't know which country your from, but some of the dell websites have online chat which is a big help at arguing your point as you can copy and paste pieces of the law and its generally easier to understand.

    Good luck

I'm in the US, and I was using chat. I found it way better and more helpful.

Contacted again and asked if they could build me another one again and exchange.

Customer ref. said he would check. After about 5 minuites, he reply he will replace it. (What took him so long to answer? )

Now I'm getting another new laptop being built for me. :D

Dell has got to have better quality control. Maybe it is cheaper for them to send customers a new laptop than keeping good quality in the first place?

Received 2nd replacement, and it has even more problems!!

    • Chipped paint on corner of the top cover.
    • Under painted top cover near side bolts.
    • Magnets under palm rest was lose again. (This is not normal. My first Latitude XT didn't have such problem)
    • Hinge had too much play. Moves side to side (this is a tablet PC) with just little force on it. Like touching the touch screen!
    • Black sticker layer of the keyboard was not adhered properly. Makes noise when I press "N" key. I can actually see the sticker is not adhering properly.
    • Fan was very noisy. Sounds like bad bearing. It makes buzzing noise.
    • Again, shipped with Windows Vista Basic Label.

I learned that the replacement laptop I have received actually was built with refurbished parts.
First two customer ref. I chat with lied me saying they will build me a complete "new" system.
Poor quality refurbished parts were why I was having all these problems.

Here is link to another post I made in Tablet PC Review forum with pictures.

That I believe is due to error in ordering system.

Windows Vista label actually is on the part list when you place order, but it doesn't get changed properly when you change version of vista or sometimes it starts with Windows vista basic label and have no way change that.

Windows Vista Basic Label should only come with systems that has Windows Vista Basic installed and all other version of vista should come with Windows Vista Premium label.

Just received return box for depot service.

It came with FedEx "Ground" label!!

    They gotta be kidding me.
Sent me a box with overnight service and have me ship it using ground service?

They are located in TX, so it probaly will take about 3 to 4 days to just get there. I was told it will take 5 to 8 business days. So, they better ship it back to me using overnight service.

Dell seems to be hit and miss in the quality department. The first Dell I ever bought was DOA. They replaced it, and it's worked perfectly ever since.

I wonder how many times I have to get it replaced to get one in perfect condition.

I have spent over a month with this issue and it looks like it will take a month just for my 3rd attempt. (with Christmas and New Year holidays and slow shipping )

I sent it back for repair instead of exchange this time. Hopefully it will actually get fixed correctly.
If not, I'm planing on demending exchange again and again until I get one in good condition.
