I put an order for a laptop on Dec 2, 2004 and they told me that the estimated date of delivery is going to be Dec. 20th. I called them today and they told me that my computer is on back order and I would receive it around Dec. 29th (if I'm lucky). The damn thing was suppose to be a Christmas gift! What should I do? Should I cancel my order? What recourses do I have?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated [ :(]

which laptop is it? I'm sure there's a lot of other people that have waited until the last to buy a laptop from Dell and they're simply backlogged at this point. You could either switch machines (which I doubt you want to do), look elsewhere for a laptop, check eBay or complete the order and just hope it comes in time (they often do arrive early, but it's a gamble of course).

It depends on which model you got.

Bought a 9200 for a friend on Dec. 2nd and it got here early last week.

I have the opposite problem--I ordered an 8600 on Friday and I wanted to cancel the order for something else. Dell doesnt allow you to cancel over the weekend, so when I went to cancel the order on Monday morning it had already shipped!
Now its Tuesday and its supposed to be delivered today.

Also ordered another 9200 on Friday and that is supposed to be here tomorrow--both teh 9200 and the 8600 werent supposed to be sent out til the 16th, but both will be eher before then.
