Do they not have an SXGA option? UXGA gives painfully small text and XGA is just too big in my opinion. SXGA is perfect, but between these options I'd probably go with XGA for better readability. This is totally personal preference though, that's not really a recommendation.

I too am making my decision today about the 9200 and screen res.
I understood that with a UXGA display, you could still configure it with larger text, icons, etc.... is this true? Can I not set the screen resolution to something other than the default UXGA?

    it's only XGA+ 1440x900
    or UXGA 1920x1200

xga+ is about the equivalent of 1280x1024 on a 17inch monitor.
I don't know how tiny the icons would be on the uxga even with changing the icon size.

    i keep changing my mind about what i want... 9200 8600 700m ??
waiting for the best deal in canada
    give me an offer I can't refuse [ :D]

Ethernet (Toronto Canada?) try this link... with the $150 off coupon, *usually* a better deal than what you would get on the main dell.ca site.
    http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/affiliates_notebooks?c=ca&cs=CADHS1&l=en&s=dhs
    got this from couponmountain.ca

this deal doesn't offer the 7200rpm 60gig but I guess you could phone them and tell them you want it with the same deal?
    I dunno

Hello there. Cool message board! Anywho, just wanted to ask to see when you are going to be getting your Dell 9200? I ordered mine on 11-03-04, and it isn't going to be sent out till Dec. 3. Also does anybody know of anywhere where they might have better pictures of this, or a 360 tour thingy, or an owners manual or something? I don't think Dell has any of this yet? You would think if they are trying to sell these, they would have something for people to look at...Well anywho, if anybody would like to write me, my email is [email protected]. Thanks!

I'll be going with UXGA just because I want options. I love high resolutions so I'm confident that I will love the UXGA screen.

As for those who don't like the super high resolutions: You can always change the screen resolution or change the font size in windows.

If you're unsure and have the money I'd just go with the UXGA screen. If you're not sure and are short on money then go with the XGA+...simple as that.

I'm just a casual gamer and -- other than that -- mainly use my computer for word processing and internet functions.

I'll probably forego the UXGA... I can either use that money to upgrade to a 1.8 Ghz or just save it to buy some more memory later on.

LCD's have a native resolution. You can change the resolution and/or the default font size but it looks like crap. Just thought you might want to know before you find out the hard way like I did. I also totally agree about the UXGA being uncomfortable to read (@ least on a 15" LCD) and that SXGA is the way to go. Hope this helps. [ :)]

btw, a wide-screen 16:9 17" is actually shorter than a regular 4:3 15" screen. Check out the following url for an explanation.

Also, do I really need to drop the extra cash on a sound card, or do the speakers work fine without it?

I didn't select the USB sound card when I ordered because it was rather expensive (though it's about the same price as retail, from the sites that I looked at) and I was trying to save money. I would rather get the PCMCIA Sound Blaster card later that supports 7.1 channels and then invest in a good sound system, probably the Logitech Z-5500. I'd love to connect my DVD play to them at the same time as my MP3 player and i9200.

I've read great things about the speakers in the i9200. I was unaware of the subwoofer that is in it until I was at i9200forums.com and read some stuff. I personally would always use headphones just because it sounds better and then I am not bothering people around me.

I have had my I9200 since 12/6 and initially was disappointed with the screen, and only the screen. After making various adjustments, including font/size, display - gamma, brightness, contrast, utilising ClearType, all at native resolution, I am becoming accustomed to the screen. I changed from Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox and was surprised to discover that the text was sharper. I can't explain that one. As for the speakers, they are outstanding for a notebook. Hold off buying speakers until you have got the computer. I am not a gamer, but I have Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 which I tried on the I9200's native resolution and maximum detail etc., and it worked perfectly. Of course compared with you gamers who are playing state of the art games this does not represent much of a test, but it works for me.

I just recommended this system to a friend and helped her set it up a few days ago. Her and her husband initially seemed not to be happy with the UXGA screen but said they could get used to it. Found it difficult to read. The text was set to large by Dell from the factory so I'm not sure how much tinkering can be done. We upped the text size in Internet Explorer and it was fine. Doing the same in Firefox didnt seem to make much of a difference. They didnt have much of a problem looking at the desktop icons and text, just in the browsers. Too bad they dont offer a S display.

That said, I just ordered one for myself (the thing is FAST as hell) and I got myself the UXGA screen. Granted I'm younger and have better vision. I thought the screen was nice. My wife also had no issue with the screen, but felt the laptop was too big for a laptop. I also justordered an 8600 for my brother with teh 15.4'' display. In a few weeks I'll be better informed to make a decision as which is better.

Sound seemed to be pretty good with the standard sound card--granted, we did no gaming/CD's/DVD's.

I will say this, the laptop is HUGE. I almost died when I took it out of the box. I currently use a Latitude D505 with the 15'' screen and the 9200 is much bigger. Weight was not too bad though considering its size.

I only got the 1.6 processor--my friends was the 2 GHz. Hers was easily faster than my home AMD 3200+ Athlon.

Well, thanks for all the advice guys!

I just ordered my 9200 10 minutes ago.
I was on a strict budget and spent $1800 including the 20% off coupon.

    i9200
    XP Home
    Pentium M 745 (1.8GHz)
    512 MB Ram (2 Dimm)
    XGA+ Screen
    80GB Hard Drive
    8xDVD / 16x CD burner (dual layer)
    Internal BlueTooth
ATI 128MB Radeon 9700 Graphics Card (standard)
    FREE Intel 2200 wireless card
    53 Whr Battery

I decided to forego any software because i have 'alternative means' of getting office and dvd burning software. Anyhow, can't wait to see this thing! My current laptop was top-of-the-line 4 years ago and now barely runs anything new and can't even hold a charge. So needless to say I'm extremely happy about this. Again, thanks for the help.

Congrats! I ordered mine a week ago and right now it's sitting under the tree. It's going to be a painful 2 weeks. I didn't check the tracking code but on the 10th I was plesently surprised to hear a knock on the door. It turned out to be the i9200! The preliminary shipping date was 12/10, so needless to say I was very happy with the early arrival, although preliminary shipping dates don't matter very much.

Be sure to post pictures when you get it! I would love some good pictures of the right side of the computer.

See http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Inspiron_9200/4852-3121_7-31223734.html?tag=tab. Most people seem to be disgusted with the WUXGA screen.

It depends on what you are going to use tha laptop for. If I had the money though, I would get the UXGA. It is the ultimate. However, I am confused what is the difference between the UXGA and WUXGA resolution?

Windows - The operating system that runs the world.

Toshiba - Quality, price, and features!
