Can I install DDR3 on Studio 1555? the Intel PM45 chipset seems to support both DDR2 and DDR3.

No, you can't. Been discussed very often here. It only supports one or the other. If it came with DDR2, you CAN'T install DDR3. What Intel means is that universally, you can have a PM45 w/ DDR2 or a PM45 w/ DDR3, not both.

ddr2 and ddr3 slots are physically different, since most laptops are limited to 2 slots, it would ddr2 OR ddr3, seldomly both, since that would be a waste of precious space.

No, and even if you could and your motherboard could support it, you would see little difference in performance.

Everyone else here summed it up nicely...there is no way to put DDR3 memory into a Studio 1555.
