If I get the D830 with the 256MB quadro and the WUXGA screen now, what are my chances of being able to upgrade the disk drive to either a blu-ray or HD-DVD drive when a replacable one comes out?

If Dell ever offers a Blu-Ray drive for the Latitude D830, then you should be able to upgrade it. I have no idea if they'll ever do that or not.

well cant you sometimes buy a new internal drive for a laptop even if its not made by that same manufacturer? Or is dell not compatible with those drives?

Not sure exactly, but there are at least a few different shapes and sizes, and the outside of the tray generally has the same casing material and paint as the laptop. For most laptops, you could probably fit some other optical drives in, but it might look weird.

hmmm well does anyone else have any first hand experience trying to upgrade/replace their d830 drives? This would be a killer deal if this works. . .

I'm sure they will also make external versions of the drives if that is something you wouldn't mind.

well, even if you can, i dont think the video output of the laptop supports HDCP, so you would only be able to watch it on your screen...

the quadros card may support it, but built in, there isnt any dvi/hdmi. although if you plug it in through a docking station, there's dvi on there...

FYI: Most of the relevant experience regarding the Latitude D8XX models is going to be with the D820. I still haven't gotten a 100% positive answer on this, but I believe the 820 and the 830 are a little bit differently sized, so you might have a tough time finding someone who has firsthand experience with something like upgrading/changing a part on the 830 already. It's very new on the market.

oh okay well I wasent aware of that, the D820 also has a WUXGA option right? On the D820 customization screen it has a no drive option, so that makes me think its a standard drive size . ..

d830 and d820 are the same exact size
    compare the spec sheets:
    d820 | d830 check page 2 "Dimensions"

there are different motherboard's and screens...besides that i think they're the same.

D-Bay modules are supposedly consistent through the entire Dxxx Latitude lineup.
