Hello, I'm new here, it's been very nice reading this forum.
I just bought my first laptop and it's being sent to me shortly. A d630 by dell. However, now I'm thinking i should have made some different configuration choices, what are my options now?
I bought it online this thursday (2 days ago), called up friday (yesterday) and asked if it was to late to change my harddrive from 80g/7200rpm to 80g/5400. they said that it was too late and that we could do a drive swap out after it arrived. I said ok.
Then after looking at my configuration i noticed that a few sites mentioned that 1440x990 native resolution on the WXGA+ lcd made text very small. I thought i had gotten just the WXGA, but for some reason i guess i added the upgrade. my resolution on my home computer is 1280 x 1024 on a 17" monitor, so I think the 1440 x 990 will be strange for me.
Then i read on the boards here that the Intel Wireless card is better than getting the Dell version. shoot. But that's just a little pushin card i can send back with the harddrive, right? (excuse my ignornace)
Any ideas on what i should/could do? I guess the screen is the only thing i can't just send in seperately to switch out, but it's also the most important worry, i really don't want to deal with small funky looking text.
. Very excited for my first laptop to arrive. The guy on the phone said it would be here in a few days.

Hi there,
I don't think it will be strange for the following raison: When in front of my laptop, I'm usually nearer of the screen than on my desktop so the pixels appear bigger.. anyway you'll like the resolution I'm pretty sure. Worst case if you have difficulty reading you can set windows fonts to an higher DPI.
Wait for the laptop to arrive but I'm pretty confident you'll like it!

You have 21 days to return the unit to Dell. You are required to pay the freight back to Dell, and are liable for a 15% restocking charge. I have heard where Dell has waived the 15% restocking charge if you upgrade to something more expensive, but it depends on the circumstances and the customer service rep. If you call Dell before you even open the package, you might stand a better chance as Dell has a category over at their outlet center for units where the seal is not broken. The 7200 RPM drive would not bother me. I also like Intel network devices, but I have never given Dell products a chance. The WXGA+ might be just fine if you up the DPI and Icon size. It is no where near the ultra screen resolutions.

Cool. Thanks.
I'll check it out first and play around with resolution. If worst comes to worst and i do want to change it, the rep who offered to help me with the harddrive swap out will definitely help me if i want to send it back b/c of the screen, after our conversation he said "ma'am, i just want to let you know you are the most patient person i've spoken to all day" , so i'm sure he would waive the 15%. -
...a quick reply:
The + screen is an excellent option. I have the same and its very good.
The 7200 RPM drive is great. It's fast and you can enable it in the bios for 'quiet' mode or 'performance' which, I believe is 'slower' or 'faster.'
And with respect to the Wi-Fi, I doubt anyone would notice any marked difference btwn the two OEM cards.
These are just my opinions, which the wife says are worthless anyway.
You're going to like your computer; the Latitudes are great machines!

2. Great. The reason i wanted 5400 is so that it would be quieter and cooler, so now it looks like I can choose. fab.
3. thanks
4. LOL
5. Woot! Can't wait. -
with the 128MB NVIDIA Quadro 135M for D630 would it be able to play decent dvds and videogames like GTR 2 and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
D630 on the way, but would like to have made different choices, what to do?
