BTW I am writing this text from a thinkpad, T23(it is at least 3 years old) the screen contrast is much better than D600 and I don't have to tweak it, it is driven by a 16M(yes 16M) savage graphics card.
My wife owns a D620 the screen is not much better than T23.

All of the reviews I read on the T61 and R61 say the Thinkpad screen is equal to the D630.
-
I don't own a T61, so I cannot comment!! I own a T22(5 years old and shows its age) and T23 both screens are better(colour contrast point of view) than D600.

just as good? im sure the screen are suppose to be better than the lenovos. I've not heard a complaint about the screen yet, but i've heard many for the T61. Or maybe Lenovo users are just more high class than us Dellers so their expectation is higher

EDIT: The reviews were written by editors who used both the T61 and D630. You have only seen pictures. -

This thread is a comparison between the new Centrino pro laptops. This includes the Lenovo Thinkpad T61, HP Compaq 6910p and Dell Latitude D630. Why do you keep bringing up old laptops that are not relevant to this thread?

i am not so sure about D600, but my D620 works fine. i am not sure how you define good screen contrast ttan98, but it is enough for my daily work. and yes i am having some issues with my D630, but i am waiting on the replacement so hopefully that will fix the problem. Since your wife has a D620, and you have a T22. why dont you post some pics on the monitor, so we can see them? Personally, i can't believe T23 will have a much better screen.
-
I am not here to degrade the LCD screen of Dell compared to Thinkpad(T22 or T23), I am writing from experience. I can post pictures of T23 and D600 or even D620 it would not serve any purpose as I can tweak both till each is comparable or better than the other when I post them. You have to believe me. There is no point lying I don't get anything in return.
I repeat, out of the box the D600 and D620 the colour contrast is inferior to Thinkpad(T22 or T23). I have to tweak my D600's screen so that it is reasonable in contrast but still not as good as I want it be, but bearable. My wife's D620 she was able to live it and did not complain so I don't touch it. This what I am saying nothing more or less. I think Dell still has issues with its LCD contrast(even D630) otherwise the reviewer would not have raised it. He has to tweak it to get what he wants. He spent 1/4 of the review on screen contrast. Other than the sccreen issue it is good laptop. I would not condemn it just because of the screen contrast, every laptop has some deficiences even Thinkpad whatever models.
I think we should let the matter rests. Enough said. -

How do you know the T61 does not have the same problems? Until you see both in person, you cannot compare the two.
EDIT:
I fail to see how this little mention of contrast distortion is a 1/4 of the review. -
doesn't Dell have multiple sources for their screen? maybe some screens are better than the other.

When is Dell going to release solid state hard drives for the D630?
-
Thanks for sharing with us, and I agree 100% that every laptop got problems here or there. But I have been surfing the net all night yesterday; trying to find that review that contain ¼ on screen contrast. The most I saw is just one paragraph, maybe you can point me to the right direction? -
" find that review that contain ¼ on screen contrast" - review on this website including pictures on LCD screen and viewing it at various angles and tweaking it.
-

3 pictures on contrast out of 20 total pictures does not equal 1/4 of the review.

I have a Insprion 6000 from few yrs ago and the screen is just perfect. Evenly brightly lead thru out and no light leakage at the bottom.
Why cant Dell go back to this screen? -
a'ight...the replacement is finally here. i have posted a pic, man i sure can feel the difference. both are set to max brightness... and my new D630 is way way way faster than D620...

Wow, that's a major difference in screen brightness, was that comparing your replacement D630 with original D630, or with the D620? Can you check what screens your D620 and D630 have?
-
I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have pics of a D630 next to a T61 next to a D620?
I'm very demanding, I know -

any updates on these brightness comparisons?

Hello people,
i am currently waiting for the discrete graphic option to be available over here in europe.
However i am still undecided to purchase the discrete graphics because with the d620 i owned i had a always running fan, especially in conjunction with the docking station.
d620_nvidia+dock = permanent fan
Can anyone of you confirm the fan is no problem when using a d630 odr d830 with the nvidia 135m or 140m on a dock?
Thanks for your help!
Nighty -
when you said problems? you mean how often the fan kicks in, or the noise?
-
I have two versions of the d620 in my reach, one with the nvs 110m and one with the intel 950GMA.
The Intel version kicks in with the fan after some time, but stays at low fan speeds mostly, really silent then.
The Nvidia version has the fan at low right from switching the machine on, and once at high fan speed it simply won't switch back to low speeds. High fan all the time.
This behaviour is seen on the dock. Only when on battery will the nvidia based solution behave like the intel version.
Worse even. ik8fangui for controlling the d620 works perfect on the intel version, on the nvidia one kernel load increases over time, suddenly cpu load will surge and fans will blow full tilt, then you have to reset. -
It's understandable to have the fan always on because the discrete GPU and the docking port on the underside of the unit causes a LOT of heat.
-
My D620 is on the docking station probably 3-4 hours a day, and i have Nvidia card. It does come on quiet often, and it is very very vociferous. But once i take it off from the docking station, the fan probably kicks in every 15-20 minutes.
And my D630 pretty does the same thing, but without the damn noise from the fan. -
question about the dock - do you have the one with the DVI port, and if so, how is the quality on it? my D630 will be shipping soon and i've seen some great deals for docking stations on ebay. i'm assuming that the docking port means that the DVI stream is uncompressed and not being channeled through a glorified USB connection?
-
A docking station should have drive bays, expansion slots, all the ports on an equivalent desktop computer, and AC power. as far as for quality goes, i am using the same docking station for almost 2 years now. and i am not having any issues; maybe i got lucky? is anyone out there had to replace docking station for any reason?
-
I've got a docking station that I've had for a couple of years and used with a D620 and D820. It worked very well. I plan to use it with the D630 when I get it. I actually think Dell's docking solution works better than anyones.
-
anyone ordered their D630 with fingerprint reader? you guys felt that mouse pad is kind of small? if yes, which wireless or blueteeth mouse are you guys currently using? just trying to get an idea before i go buy one somewhere...
-
I got one last week at a local Sam's club.
I was about $35 and that is kind of good deal you can meet. -

As far as the fingerprint reader, the buttons are smaller but are still very accessible. I highly recommend it for the meager $30, the security benefits are great. -
are those portable enough, cause i know i will be carrying it around. those are regular size mouse right?
-
is D630 a worthy upgrade to the D620 or should I just stick with a D620?
D630 got it.
