I received my D630 this morning, and playing around with it at the office. But somehow it is slower than my D620...lmao. I do not have Vista loaded, and I haven’t installed anything yet. Well just the XP service packs and Norton. It is taking forever to boot; this is not what I expected it from a Santa Rosa notebook. Other than that, it supposed to have a brighter screen but I can't tell the difference from my D620 and D630. Anyone else received their D630, and having the same issues as me? I don’t really want to call Dell, I am sure they can’t do much for me anyway. All I can say is OUCH…

I receive mine in a few minutes/hours. I plan to benchmark it all and submit my review to Andrew as we agreed. Mine is a bit more loaded than yours, I use Vista Business and 2GB of RAM.

My review will most likely be turned in on Tuesday (family things).

Yeah, only improvement I have seemed so far is the wireless connection speed. Other than that, my D620 perform much better.

I should be getting mines later today. You should try and do a clean install of Vista and see if its all the bloatware that is slowing it down.

If you got a preloaded copy of XP on your system, I would highly recommend a fresh install of it. Even with my Vista preload I did a fresh install and it made a difference. Maybe your situation will be similar. Can't hurt to try no?

LeeC81 could it be the case that Windows is updating your Windows XP? I noticed the same thing when my sister first recieved her E1505. After removing the bloatware and letting Vista install all the updates the computer ran much faster.

I would also like to know if you think the screen is too dark? I know a good number of people on this board chose the D630 over the T61 due to the screen being dim on the T61.

Fresh install was completed; now my fingerprint reader is unrecognizable lmao...this is driving me nutz. I will go ahead and update all my drives, and install the SP. So hopefully that will help.

Lemuel on my original post I have stated that; I can't tell a difference between my D630 and D620 regards to screen brightness.

From top of my head, I believe D620 is 180 nits and D630 is 220 nits. I am going to cuzz the hell out of Dell, I am updating all the drives and notebook went dead not response to anything. After 4 hours of “messing around”, I had to push the power bottom 4 times to get it restart. This is some BS crap; I am on hold with Dell. They better send me a new D630…or my business goes to IBM from now on.

Best of luck to you. Btw do you know if the d630 is mono or stereo speakers? Thanks

And obviously you can't tell any performance increase at all. this isn't looking good for me.

I don't see more than 1 speaker on this thing, but haven’t had the chance to read the manual yet. So I am assuming it is a mono. I am probably the only add ball around here Sirius, i am sure other peoples are having fun with their D630...

screw the pics, this damn notebook pissed me off enough. not going to dress him up and snap his butt..

Yes, according to the review and Dell website, the D630 have 220 nits.

And now you mean to tell me the screen brightness is the same?

I been following this D620 screen thing since last year and on Dell own forum too. I own a D620 last year and I have to return back to Dell.

I am going to wait until most of you say if this is brigher or not.

This is my last straw on Dell and I am not buying their laptop anymore.

Can you tell me what day did you order your D630 and how long did it take to receive? Thanks.

Does the Dell Latitude D630 have stereo speakers or mono speakers. I ask because CNET says the D630 has stereo speakers. Everyone I asked says the review is wrong.

    Thanks for your help.

Sorry to double post, but this misconception has to be cleared. The Dell Latitude D620 with WXGA+ resolution has always had 220 nits. I know that for a fact because I have been looking at these settings since January. The WXGA resolution was 180 something. The D630 WXGA+ resolution screen is not any brighter than the D620 WXGA+ resolution screen.

the invoice was dated 5/21/07, shipped on 5/30 and i received it with next business air this morning. So 12 days includes weekend!

Chong don't take my personal review for it, i am sure it was just a glitch. Dell agreed to ship me a new D630, so i will see if it improves any. if not, i am going to return it and get a T61.

I tho for sure WXGA is 160, and WXGA+ is 180 for D620. anyone can clearify this for us? Homer i am sure you are right, because i dont see any improvement at all on D630.

The speakers are awful, be prepared to bring your own headphones or some external speakers. It's like they purchased these things from a RadioShack.

I recently received my D620. According to the latest numbers on the Dell website, the 620's WXGA is 180 nits and the WXGA+ is 220 nits. Both screen options for the D630 is listed as 220 nits.

I ordered the WXGA+ screen for my 620 and am VERY pleased with it. The screen is crisp, bright, clear with no graininess whatsoever and no leakage on the sides or bottom.

I quote this below from the Cnet Review:

"The Latitude D630's 14.1-inch wide-screen display is remarkably bright (223 cd/m^2 in our Labs measurement). "

The rest of the review for the D630: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-latitude-d630/4505-3121_7-32445398.html

So is the D630 brighter? Cnet got lab to do this test.

I hope someone can do a good review comparing the D620 v D630 soon.

    Thanks!

Has D630 in battery mode the same maximal brightness as in AC power mode or the screen is dimmed out?

On other Dells I've used, going on battery power dims the screen by default, but you can change that either with Fn-uparrow, or by tweaking the BIOS settings, and you can set it to the same max brightness as with electrical power. Haven't tried the D630 but I assume it works the same way.

Hopefully you just got a lemon Lee and it's not indicative of the D630 in general. :) Although, bad luck for you.

Yeah, I'd love to hear some battery numbers. CNet was throwing around 4 hours and something in the DVD test with the 9 cell compared to a bit over 2 hours in the same test with the T61. Let's see if they weren't pulling numbers for the D630 from you-know-where.

    Speakers are mono Homer.

It is very much dimmed out after I pulled the plug; that's normal i wasn't suprised at all.

    as far as for battery life goes, here is my little test;
--Running 5 applications, power point, two financial applications uploaded from remote access, IE, and outlook express.
--I started running on battery at 9:30pm, then went out to the bar with few friends. Got back home a little pass 2:00am, and the battery was at 8%. so 4 and half hours with 8% left, so it can do 5 hours easily i believe. but also, i was not running anything that requires a lot CPU useage.

It will never last 8 hours. Battery life estimates given on websites are not realistic. 5-6 hours of battery life with a 9 cell battery is excellent.

Agreed, 5-6 hours would be excellent. However we're not even hitting 5 hours idling. Hopefully others could chime in with a little more real-world usage pattern.

I understand that 5-6 hours would be excellent but a review I read (I believe from pcmag) made it seem like the Santa Rosa was god like in battery efficiency. Seriously, reviews are completely worthless. Stereo speakers, 9 hour battery life, comparing a t7300 processor with a laptop with a t7700.

A usual Sirius GTO does not know what he is talking about. Most of his posts are full of wrong information. :chatterbox: The batteries are 5 to 6 hours.

Sirius' posts are on the whole very informative. Though, I'm sure he'll give us some more real usage results when he receives his laptop soon. Then we can gain a better overall figure of how it performs without the plug.
