Asking this on behalf of a roommate who has a couple month old D630 with the Intel N wireless card.....

Here's the deal: At his desk, he is roughly 10 feet from the wireless router, with excellent signal strength, and yet his connection is so slow, it is basically worthless. He has to plug in to the LAN using a cable. Yet go 10 feet in the other direction in the living room and it works quite well, though is also a bit slow. Again excellent reception.

We recently upgraded from our old (I think it was) G router to an N router, and he is still having the same issues, so that didn't solve it. Nobody else in the house is having any speed issues on either router, though we don't have N wireless either.

We are completely stumped. If the reception is excellent, why is the information not getting through? And if it is something with the router/DSL, why is nobody else having a problem?

Any suggestions are very helpful. Is there a known issue with the Intel card? Something with Dell's specifically? New drivers he might need? Anything at all?

    I appreciate the assistance.

I'm a complete noob, so I don't know if this is worth anything, but maybe it's the computer itself that is slowing it down?

Thats the thing. We're wondering how to determine if it is the computer or something else.

    Thanks for the reply.

have you tried using QoS settings for the router? u can usually find how to do this at the routers website.

have you tried running a bandwidth/file transfer benchmarking program to make sure that it's not the other end that has the slow connection.
ex. speedtest.net or do a file transfer and time it make sure ur getting proper speeds.

I had a very similar problem with my D630. Any program that connected to the internet was horribly slow and I was only 4ft away from the router. Try connecting to another router (i.e. coffee shop) and see if it is faster. I was using a Linksys Wireless B router and replaced it with a Linksys G router and now everything works great. The new wireless chip doesn't seem to play well with some older routers. Update the firmware and/or try a different router. I hope this works for you.

Do you get any Access to the Internet or can you not even view the Internet?

Is the Router Secured? If it is are you sure you typed in the Right PassPhrase or Security Key.
