It's a slow day today, stayed home from work. My wife asked me to take pictures of a bag for her purse forum (yes, apparently they have purse forums, too) and figured why not take a couple of my computer as well.

Without further ado, the Dell Latitude D630, from an amateur photographer's POV :

Way too much depth of field. Did you just get DSLR and a f1.8 or 2.8 lens or something?

    That was the point.

Nope, had my XTi for a while now.

    Thanks for the input, anyway.

I think he meant way too little depth of field :)

Me, I think it is fine. Dave

Nice photos sir - are you happy with the LCD - especially the brightness?

    Nice job Paolo!

Just a super laptop so far. What cooler do you have underneath there?
I'm thinking of getting one for when I'm at home, and docked.

    Best,
    Ilham

Very happy with the LCD. I have the 1440 x 900 matte AUO that seems to have a bad reputation on this board, but I have not noticed the light bleed or grain that everyone seems to be reporting back. Overall very crisp, and certainly one of the better LCD's i've ever had on a laptop.

The brightness is the least of your worries on the D630, in my opinion. The only time I have it on max brightness is when the sun is directly behind me, and the LCD is still comfortable to look at in those situations. In mose cases I have it one notch from brightness, which is plenty.

    Regards,
    Paolo

Paolo - Thank-you and good news about the LCD. I'm not at all unhappy with my dv2000 - its just that the D620 is so nicely made that I really want to get one. I also noticed that the hdd just slides into the case - no adaptor on the connection end - unlike previous Dells (although I bet Dell will still stick me for $40 or so for the drive-cover thingy). I'm not sure what size the battery is on my wife's D620 - but it doesn't protrude so I assume its a six-cell. Thanks again... Edited to add: You took your plastic protectors off of your palmrest/etc - how could you do such a thing.... ;)

I agree. It really has been just a superb computer so far. Very well built; kudos to Dell.

The "cooler" i'm using is actually just a tray to keep it on my lap. Bought that a few years ago, which is probably a testament to it's construction. Well, not much moving parts, anyway. It puts enough distance between the computer and my lap to use it for hours, and gives the computer ample ventilation. The mouse extension is very usable, too.

Your mileage may differ however - just depends on the actual posture of your lazy chair.

    Product is here.

    Regards,
    Paolo

The D630 is nicely made indeed.

I can't say much about the other notebook lines, but I have noticed that the D6xx is a model that is actually ok to "sit on", ie the design just gets better over time. The Dell guys have done good on this model in that they really pay attention to the shortcomings of the predecessor and apply it to the forward model. I've used (and still using) the D600, D610 and D620 - and they have followed that trend on each release.

If you don't mind taking it easy, rest assured the D640 will probably even be better.

    Regards,
    Paolo

I replaced the hard drive just recently, and yes it just slid right out (and in) after removing a couple of screws at the bottom of the computer. The caddy is reusable, and don't forget to pick up a tube of (blue) LocTite.

Yes I think it's a six cell, and from the reading ive done so far, it's the same as the one on the D620.

I concur. It is the same exact one as the D620, and fully interchangeable with the D630.

Paolo, what accessories have you gotten to use for the D630? I've only gotten a bluetooth mouse so far, and a Ready Boost stick. Still looking for speakers to use in home, a cooling pad for in house, and possibly a Media Bay battery...

    Best,
    Ilham

Not much accessories yet, really. I have the tray which is a "recycled" accessory; the Microsoft BT Presenter Mouse (which I like very much for the media controls); a 4.0GB Lexar Firefly ReadyBoost stick (the smallest and cheapest I've seen around, which I got at Wal-Mart of all places); and the 2.0GB RAM and 200GB/7,200 drive that I swapped myself.

Overall very happy! Although my wife gets more upset each day at how anyone could possible spend so much time on a computer - the time I spend at the office and almost every waking hour at home!
