I've had my D630 for about a month, and I just noticed that the lid had a little free play when I close/open it. When I tilt the notebook back and forth, the lid can move back and forth about an inch.

    Is anyone else experiencing this?
Should I get the notebook serviced or is this normal?

I'm going to be attending school in about two weeks and I can afford any down time so any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

That's quite strange, for a business class notebook, the lid's hinges should be quite tight and sturdy. There shouldn't be any loose tilting of the screen.
It'd bother me a lot if the notebook's lid wobbles around with ease, it represents poor build quality in my view.

I'd recommend giving Dell Customer Service a chat about that situation. It's not exactly the quality that you'd expect from such a notebook.

That's what I thought too. I'm quite disappointed. I'll see what I can do with customer service.

    Anyone else experiencing the problem?

My advice is send the laptop in for repairs. What's happening is that the both of the display support hinge brackets are loose because the screws holding them in place have actually come loose. That's why you notice a wobble.

My 4yr old Inspiron 5100 has had these issues and i've replaced the back display cover myself which temporarily fixed the problem until the screws became loose again from opening and closing the lid.

The fix is simple but requires disassembly of the top display unit which I have done twice. Once you have access to the loose screws on the support hinge bracket a screwdriver and a little loctite glue does the trick.

My problem is my laptop has developed cracks at the bottom on the display hinge and the parts have been discontinued.

This is definitely not normal for the current dell business models, something obviously hasn't been put together correctly or tightened.
My M65 is over a year old and still has absolutely no wobble with an open screen......get them to fix it pronto,I think I would be asking for a new base as well because if the screws are loose and the screen has been wobbling about in the sockets the hinges fit in,it has probably expanded or damaged them as well....I hate wobbly screens!!

I really hate wobbly screens as well. I have a dell technician coming out with new hinges this Tuesday. Hopefully he can fix the problem. I'm praying nothing else was damaged.

Give them a call just to be sure. Our D620, D630 and D430 copies are all built well. No hinge play, chassis flex/creak to speak of, which I think is one of the selling points of the recent business-class notebooks.

    Good luck,
    Paolo

hate to bump this thread, but it could help people who might experience this on their own D630s.

i had the same rocking/loose monitor. investigating a bit i realized that the hinges were still gripping the screen fine; the looseness seemed to be where the hinges hooked onto the frame. along the back of the laptop (where the vga/ethernet/etc ports are located) there are two screws that had some play in them and needed to be tightened. after doing this, the screen was firm again.
