I received my D610 a couple days ago but am thinking of taking it back because of all the electrical noise coming from it! Even without a USB device plugged in you can still hear the noise (although it does get worse with a USB pluigged in). Is this normal, or is my (otherwise nicely built) notebook defective?

I know the D610 has several problems with headphone noise, so it might be causing the same noise that you are hearing. It has been a problem since March, and Dell keeps promising that they would release a BIOS update to fix it. As you can probably guess, that hasn't happened yet. It was supposed to be out during June, then got pushed to July. If its really that bad, I would send it back, and order a different latitude.

I just bought a D610 myself. It seems to be very quite. I can hear what I think people are refering to as the "hiss" when headphones are plugged in, but it can't be heard when any music or dvd is playing and is barely audible which the headphones plugged in but nothing playing. I know I don't sit around listening to nothing so it hasn't been terribly noticable to me ;) Haven't tried plugging an a USB device since I don't have a need.

I just got my D610 this week and I've noticed slight electrical noises when I do certain things. I haven' tried headphones yet. Either way, it's better than the noisy fan that comes from my PC. My one problem with the D610 is that the screen seems to have bad viewing angles. I didn't think new laptop screens were too bad with that, but it is just an XGA screen. Is the D610 screen just not that great?

They actually did release that BIOS update, in my opinion it didn't really help.

Sorry, I got the SXGA+ screen, the side angles are good but vertical isn't so great but it's otherwise a good screen.

Oh well, looks like I'm going to send it back, maybe get a HP nc6230, anyone have any experience with those or know if they have electrical noise issues?

I know with the 8100 I used to have, it made aweful noises with the IR turned on. If I disabled it in the BIOS though, it went away.

i can't believe Dell hasn't addressed this yet, anyone that does some research on the D610 before buying it is going to see these comments, we've posted two reviews on the D610 on this site (latest here: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2472) and both reviewers listed it as a big annoyance. I don't know of any other current laptop that suffers so badly from this, Dell needs to rattle some cages at where this thing is being manufactured and get the design engineers back to the drawing board.

Yea, I read a lot of research on this laptop before I bought it (including both the reviews here) and was prepared for the static headphone problem. I didn't see anything about the electrical noice though, that's what really bugs me.

Now that I've used the notebook awhile, I did notice a noise, but it doesn't seem electrical. It's a repeating noise...I thought it was the hard drive spinning but it doesn't come on until the computer has been on awhile. Could be the fan, but it really doesn't sound like that. It's sort of a high-pitched noise. Kind of odd.
