Today I was about to install Linux along side my Vista installation, and while I was formatting a new partition for Leopard I noticed I had heaps of hidden and unneccesary partitions. I have a pic of them below. I want to get rid of them, does anyone know what they are for? I did do a clean installation when I got the laptop and installed media direct but surely I don't need all this crap. Also my media direct partition appears as drive d:\ and it is 25 gigs but why does it need 25 gb and when I click on it in My Computer it says it needs to be formatted...

You're trying to install Leopard on your 1530? Installing an Apple OS on non-Apple hardware is against its EULA...
EDIT: BTW MediaDirect doesn't take up 25 GB. It's probably the 2 GB partition. Also, it wouldn't show up in My Computer because it's hidden.
The 25 GB partition is the size of D:\ that was left over after choosing a size for C:\ when you formatted. You need to format it in order to use it. -
I was sure I made it as big as possible. Any how what about the other ones like the 45mb one? I surely didn't make those.
-
The 45MB one may be the Dell Utility Partition, not to be confused with Dell Recovery Partition.
In GParted the partitions are more clearly labeled and nothing is hidden.... -
I have 4 partitions... C:\, D:\, a 2.01 GB MediaDirect partition, and a 47 MB EISA Configuration partition. I'm not sure if the last one is really necessary to keep; I don't know exactly what it does. -
Like I say, with GParted, you can view the contents of such partitions, and get a better idea of what purpose they serve.

GParted seconded. In addition, you can edit, resize, delete (be very damn careful with deletions), etc. Great app. Start by using it set on Automatic; makes life much easier, IMO.

Yeah I will try Gparted, I wonder what ones I can delete though. -
Open them first and see what they contain.....maybe research a little....
