This morning on the Dell site, they are now charging $20 bucks for all the colors except black!!!!
I also noticed that the delay times are back up again to 12 days...what a bunch of crap!
If everyone orders the black, I can see problems with backorders for that too!
Honestly, what a fiasco!
-
i think they were always charging for the colors
-
-
.... They always charged the $20
-
-
you were either lucky or more likely you just never noticed it, seeing as how you haven't seen it in ghost orders until just recently
-
They weren't charging when I ordered mine and didin't seem start charging until the lids were on backorder.
-
They always charged for colors -
They never charged for the colors on the 1720 models. On all of the other models, they charged $20.
-
$20 ? Are we really complaining about that
-
-
from what i remember when placing my order was that some colors were being charged extra in certain sections, ie home, business, epp. cause doing a lot of comparison pricing from 1 section to another yielded different prices, some of which did not reflect a price change from the different color.
-
They've never charged on the dell.ca website. I got my brown lid for no extra charge.
But to be honest, I would have rather gotten the much better deals and coupons dell.COM offers and paid $20 for the stupid lid. Dell.ca has almost no coupons.
I still qualified for "Instant Savings" on my order but people posting here buying from dell.com seem to have gotten slightly better deals than I.
$300 coupon?... or free $20 lid colour? I would have taken the $300 coupon. -
I'm positive that when I ordered it depended on if you got the base package 1520 for like 849 or the one that they added stuff to for 999 or something. If you ordered from the base model and built up you were charged for colors but if you ordered from the upgrade package you weren't charged but the price was probably kind of hidden in that cost.
That might be where some of the confusion is. I know the 1520's were like that I can't remember if the 1420 or 1720 was but I think they were the same. -
Ok heres the deal....when you go to build your system depending on the level you choose to build at ie. good better best config...this adjusts for colors...if you pick good you will get charged to change it to a color...if you pick better or best config it comes standard with i think ruby red therefore it does not charge you to change to any other color...and i believe it subtracts $20 if you pick black...that is it..they always were and are charging.
edit: just checked it out and via home purchase program they all start at black and charge however when i used dell university it was the way i stated above. -
oh they never charged me for color... perhaps that's because i got it from dell.ca. but yeah you're right dell.com does charge you $20--but that still isn't much considering you can use all those coupons you guys are talking about, i couldn't use any coupons with dell canada, i just got an EPP discount....and haha they screwed up my order so many times that they upgraded my processor and hard drive for free....stupid dell customer service.

Apple charges $125 for the black color on the Macbook... so I say $20 is a bargain.
-
I remember it being free
-
you were always charged for the colour, it just automatically selected on of the colors for you so it seemed like it was included in your price, if you had looked, you wouldve noticed plain black is 20 dollars less, meaning you paid 20 bucks more for the color
-
-
They were charging $18 when I bought my 1520 (although I still went with the jet black). At first I thought you were complaining at the $2 difference, I was like, "You gotta be kiddin' me".
-
But yes, as far as I know Dell has always charged for the colors. -
As far as I know they always charged for colors. The reason alot of people may not have realized this is because before when you tried to configure your system the default color selected was most likely some color other than black. Had you looked closely you would have noticed that if you chose black it would subtract $20 off your total cost. Oh and depending on whether you opted for a DellCare warranty beforehand the prices of the colors would range between $18 and $20. I believe it is because of the 3-10% discount you get when you choose one of those packages.

They were not charging till first week of jul (I ordered 1420 Blue on Jul 2 and wasn't charged). That's when the madness with delays started, and it went to 18$ and now its 20$.
Not that I care much for $18, its still a bargain for red. -
On the 1720 series...they were free.
-
Who would've thought that a product in high demand and low supply would increase in price?
-
hehe someone knows the basics of economic theory
-
This link doesn't charge extra for colors:
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/odg/odg_special49?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=2
It doesn't let you choose the pink or yellow though -
they definitely didn't charge for colors back when I ordered it (7/19). And it didn't say "-$20" for choosing the black. Everything was "+$0". I ordered via Dell University
-
Dell Canada has no extra charge, no matter what the colours.
And Dell Canada seems to give a lot better deals, like add Office 2007 for $99, instead of $149, etc compared to the american site. -
Big deal. Apple's been charging a $125 premium for the black Macbook for over a year.
Mac users would love to be getting nailed, only, 20 bucks for a color choice. -

Well you'll love this one. Check today on the EPP site and they're charging $50 for the colors other than black. This is for the 1420 at least.
Quick somewhat unrelated question: when purchasing through Dell University (EPP), can you still stack the Dell Unleashed student coupon (now $250) on top of all the other discounts on the EPP site? -
"Now $20.00", you better make it $50.00  , I'm glad I got my expresso brown for free

As previously mentioned, the differences extend BEYOND just the color although Dell does a lousy job of explaining this...
The "micro satin" finishes used on colors other than black and white do a MUCH better job of resisting finger prints......
For reference, I ended up with the "Midnight Blue" on my 1420....
For those on the fence, I'd really recommend the micro satin covers and if possible visit a local Dell kiosk to see for yourself.
