Honestly, it is pretty crazy having a crappy 17" LCD screen on a $1,400 laptop.
Well, I did the Dell chat thing yesterday and today and they finally said they would send my a different screen. The guy said I have a WXGA+ LG and he is going to send me a WXGA+ Samsung. I have heard people say the Samsung is better and I have heard people say the LG is better.
What are the drawbacks of the WXGA+ Samsung and the LG? Is one really better then the other or am I waisting my time?
I asked about the WUXGA and they said I would have to send the laptop back and do another order to get that screen. I e-mailed him asking again but we'll see.
Also, I have e-mailed the guys at Screentek about 5 times and they e-mailed me back saying "What I did is ask my boss to put in a order for these panels A.S.A.P because there so many request for these panels along with several upgrades so as soon as I know so will you." Hopefully they get them. Too bad I would have to send in my laptop.
Is this "PixelBright" screen really that good? Will it really improve the colors and viewing angle?

ScreenTek doesn't have any WUXGA+ screens. I've already tried that. They can't do the upgrade either.
You should be able to get dell to send you a WUXGA+ screen, and have them replace it. You shouldn't have to create a whole new order for it.
Yes, the WUXGA+ is much better. I had the WXGA+ screen for a year, and today I upgrade it to the WUXGA+ screen. The screen is so much brighter, and the colors seem better.

Also, screentek e-mailed me and they are trying to order the PixelBright screen for the WXGA+ screens. They say a lot of people have been asking about them. -
Yeah, i sent them an email about it earlier this week, and got the run around. First they told me that they could, then they said that they couldn't.
I never did check to see which screen i had. I"ll check when i get back home. -
Well, this thread doesn't seem to be going very well Guess eveyone just cares about the WUXGA+ screens and not the little cheap wxga+ screens.
Well, I got the Samsung replacement LCD yesterday and I was "hot swapping it with my original LG/Phillips screen.
The good things:
The Sammy has better color and is less washed out. It also has better viewing angles. I say a good 20 degrees better.
The LG/Phill has little light leakage. about 1/4 of an inch on the bottom and next to non on the top.
The bad things:
The Sammy has bad light leakage only at the bottom. It has a 1/4 inch line of light leakage but has a "flare" of light in the center on the bottom and on the sides at the bottom. With an all black screen, it is pretty noticeable. Some people say it goes away after a while, but I don't think it will.
The LG/Phill have bad washed out colors. The viewing angles are pretty bad but that is only part of it. This screen has some sort of reflective layer on it that kinda shifts the colors when you move your head. Even if you move your head 1-2 inches, it is pretty noticeable.
At the end of the day, I think I am going to keep the Sammy. I hope some of the light leakage goes away but I really doubt.
Last, I don't think I am going to invest in the PixilBright screen for my lappy. I really wanted a matte screen and now I am closer to being happy with it. I just hope some of the light leakage goes away.
P.S. Does anyone know the "technical" reason why the light leakage should go away? -

I agree...I have the Samsung screen and I think it is alot better than the LG. I don't know why it would go away.

EDIT: I didn't notice you were talking about the leakage in that last sentence -

As you get used to a screen. You tend to notice the light leakage less. Or atleast thats my 0.01 cent(Thats not a typo).

Now if your comparing it to the newer LG WC222 theres no contest the LG smacks the samsung around, very little to no light leakage, much better color accuracy, less sparkles.
The Sharp screen is also very comparable to the WC222
As for terrible screens I'd agree that the original LG screen was bad, but every screen since that including the Samsung has been at least average to good. I digress tho since I've been using laptops since Monochrome Plasma days
Also 1400$ ... I'm not expecting the same level of quality as say.... a Sony Xbrite, 1400$ is just plain cheap in comparison to an upper tier system -
How can I figure out which screen I have on my Inspiron 9400 (it's the WXGA version with 1440 x 900 res)?
-
By the way, the LG/Philips screen I have is the LP171WX2 and the Samsung is a LTN170WX-L03.
Also, the replacement cost of the screen is about $350-$400, so I exspected a better screen for my laptop. One could easily buy a very nice 19" Acer or Viewsonic for $250-$280 from newegg. So I really didn't exspect to have Color, viewing angle and light leakage problems.
Anyway, I am keeping the Samsung and I am fairly happy with it compared to the LG crap. -
You can go online and sign in check out the service tool and it will tell you which screen. Also powerstrip can generally identify it.
Crappy screens on a $1,400 lapto??????
