I've had my Inspiron 6400 for a little over a month now, and I am noticing crackling noises that occur from time to time, if not once in a while. Sometimes all I hear is a single pop. I believe the noise comes from the harddrive.

When I ran the disk defragmenter last night, the crackling noise was a bit continuous. I am running the defragmenter again right now, and I haven't heard any crackling.

Is the crackling harddrive a common problem among the new dell products?
    Any suggestion? Thanks in advance!

Cracking noise is not common. I would back up all my data and then call Dell your HD might be breaking

I think its normal.... my HDD sometimes makes the same crackling noise but I haven't noticed any change in performance or anything like that.... what brand of HDD do you have anyway? mine is a samsung if that helps.....

If you're too paranoid I'd suggest you call dell to get your HDD replaced. But I suspect you'll get the same noise with the other HDD as well....

Just a side note... does anyone know how dell deals with replacing HDD? do they ask you to send in your old one first before they can mail you a new one or could you keep them both? (which I highly doubt would be possible)

For Latitude notebooks, Dell sends out a replacement HD along with prepaid return address label.
