Could this possibly be the release of the Vostro line?

They could mean the Vostro line....I'm really lookin forward to seeing the new models.

    Hopefully, I DON'T like how they look so I don't feel bad I got a 1520 instead. :p

Them being all black is really attractive to me.

I have some inside info, although it isnt much. (I just received it about 10 minutes ago from a Dell employee/friend)

Dell plans to announce a complete new line of laptops tomorrow. One of the most significant breakthroughs is that they will no longer have hard drives as we know it.

They will be completely flash-drive based. And apparently this means that they will also consume far less power, and run significantly cooler, AND be significantly cheaper. (Im not sure why being flashed based will make them cheaper, but that is what the dell guy told me)

My contact told me that the inspiron 1520 I just ordered - that I might be able to get a system with the same features that I ordered for $1377, "2 times faster with all the other features for about $700"

(The text in quotes are from my dell contact)

So Im sort of wondering if I bought my inspiron 1520 a few days too early.

Im going to post this in its own thread now.

SSD Flash Harddrive is nothing new and definately nothing groundbreaking. it only comes in 32 gb, and probably not 64 gb variants and it is already being offered in the 1330.

one of the things about the vostro is that it is only offered through small business. big mistake to me because i don't wnat to purchase it through small business program. i'm a student so i would only want one through the student program.

Im kind of hoping that my contact was wrong, and that the vostro wont have the 8600m-GT that the inspiron has, lol. I finally decided on a laptop, and I dont want to start doubting my choice again. :D

Ive asked him if he meant that the new line will have 160Gb of flash storage and the same video options. No response yet.

you've got to be kidding right? why would dell release something that's going to make people cancel their 1520 orders?

And no, the Vostro (if it is based on Flash memory) will be an ultralight brand meant for traveling business people. Dell doesn't undercut themselves by producing a superior product for cheaper. Expect 8gb or 16gb SSD HDs at the maximum, as the 32gb and 64gb (largest you can get) variants easily shoot at the $350-500 range alone, OEM.

The new line *may* have Solid State Drives as an option. But at the starting price point of $699 (taken from the flyer scan in the other Vostro thread) SSD is not likely.

My contact also told me (quoted from his email)

"Also ram is done with flash memory sticks as well. "

So Would the main system ram (2GB or so) being flash memory have any significant impact on speed or power consumption?

I still havent heard back from him.

I'm not sure why a 32gb hard drive would make people want to cancel orders for the Inspiron. By the time you load up Vista, your music collection, and a few PC games, you'd have no room on the hard drive. That's not convenient at all.

Good for limited requirements, maybe if you have spreadsheets and Word documents on the PC which don't eat space up.

Maybe it has a 32gb or 64gb HD for the OS and swapfile and a few key apps, and a regular HD for the bulk storage?

That would make it significantly faster for most things, wouldnt it?

Its like the old days when people would create "Ram Drives"

Only this time, it makes -sense- to put your swap file on the "ram drive" as opposed to being stupid in the old days.

Okay. Im predicting that tomorrows new laptop line will, in addition to some fancy new SDD (Flash ram) Option, it will also be scalable/upgradeable.

I.e. You will be able to upgrade the video card easily, down the road.

I say this because my "contact" just sent me another cryptic email 5 minutes ago. Lol.

I dunno - maybe he's playing with me, giving me info to see what I'll post. Lol.

But those are the things he's told me. Flash Ram based, Runs Cooler, Twice as fast, Scalable/upgradeable. Also allows up to 8GB of Ram.

He -said- that the laptop will have 250gb of Flash Ram for the HD. I find that very hard to believe, so maybe he's confusing something. So take all of this with a grain of salt. Im just sharing what he told me within the last 2 hours.

again, this is a business laptop, why would business laptops need to change their video cards every so often?, it doesn't make too much sense.

btw: mty, you have one cheap laptop configuration. how do you figure?

I also want to add that my "contact" never said anything about Vostro. Maybe this is an entirely different line he was talking about that is (also?) getting released tomorrow.

Maybe he is punking me, I dunno!

    Base price $1877 + $154 tax

    -$350 coupon
    -$150 Dell Kiosk Coupon
-$154 tax (having it shipped to Montana = no tax, then to me in Ca)

    $1377 total

I'll have to pay UPS ground shipping from Montana to California, but that should be less than $20.
