First of all... how bad is it to have the bottom vents blocked? It it abe to cool down enough using just the side and top vents? Also does it have some kind of fail safe? Like if it gets too hot will it shut down? And if it does do that then will it try putting fans at max speed before taking that step?
I used i9kfangui for a little, and the max speed of the fans seems to be quite a bit faster than what I've seen the notebook use on it's own. Will the notebook ever set it to that speed on its own if it gets hot enough? (When they are at max speed it is VERY loud. Almost as loud as the CD drive at full speed)
Oh and I have the 7800. One thing I noticed is the GPU fan seems to be a lot less effective than the CPU fan... which is a shame because the GPU runs MUCH hotter and almost always has it's fan on.

I've got an E1705 with the Geforce and it does seem to get a little hot. With regular use, with none of the vents blocked, the top right portion of the base gets noticeably more hot than the other parts of the laptop.
Blocking the bottom vents would be hazardous. Those are the main vents, so blocking them will make your laptop unusually hot.
I bought one of these to help with the cooling. The raised laptop with the stand seems to have helped a bit with the heat. The top right portion of my laptop isn't as hot anymore, but it doesn't completely remedy the cooling problem.
I don't mess with the fans, so I can't say anything about those. -
