Well I have finally made the switch from a Desktop gaming rig to a Vostro 1500 w/ 8400m GS I have currently overclocked my Card to 630/535. And well I need to have more tomorrow I will be adding some as5 to the GPU and seeing if there is any way i can improve the cooling of the video card. I have a question is there a way that I can change the values at which the fan turns on in the laptop?

dont add as5 to the gpu. you cant. there is a gap between the heatsink and gpu which requires a heat pad not just thermal paste. if you remove the pad, the heatsink will not reach the gpu.

side note, why didnt you get the 8600gt for gaming?

Would you really need a cooling mod? I wouldn't think you would especially if you had the 8400m GS.

Even the 8600m GT is pretty cool *shrugs*

    Same question as nizzy

Hmm a gap I guess I will see what I can do. I do plan on getting the 8600m Gt ($140 from dell) But for the reason of me not getting the 8600m I got an amazing deal on the vostro w/ 1500 ($420 shipped on ebay brand new) so I figure I will do what I can and then move onto the 8600m :)

I have been thinking about a copper shim for this "gap": lap'd + as5 on both sides.

But, I have not yet looked into materials because of two concerns: exact measures to avoid lifting the pipe off the neighboring northbridge chip and complete flatness of the ship to avoid any core crushing or uneven heat transfer.

Any accurate way to measure 2 sides of as5 thickness + the current compressed height of the thermal pad that ships from the factory?
