I just recently purchased a 1720 (still waiting for it however) and I've been looking at some coolers for it. I was wondering if a cooler is really something I need, the laptop will mostly stay in my room on a wooden desk. Should I invest in a laptop cooler or is it just one of those unnecessary things that I don't really need. I mean the laptop does have fans right, shouldn't they serve their purpose?

From what I've heard (and experienced), the new inspirons do a great job of taking away excess heat. A cooler would help, but is by no means required.
