Good morning to everyone!
I know this is going to be pretty impossible, but I want to give it a try anyway.
I have a 1280x800 TrueLife screen, but the vertical view suxs (as soon as I move even slightly I have to tilt the screen because I can't see anything) and the colors aren't very 'warm'. Most of all though I'd like to change screen because I'm not happy with the 1280x800 resolution, I really would prefer a 1440x900.
My request to dell will be to get the screen exchange with a 1440x900 truelife screen, paying the difference in price. Sadly I've had this pc for around 45 days so I can't return it for a system exchange, I didn't even think of doing this, but lately I've been very very busy because of University exams.
My question to you is: how can I put this to Dell? I mean, how should I ask them and what 'buttons' should I push to try and convince them to help me? Do you think I should tell them that since they can 'refurbish' this screen and they can give me a refurbished 1440 screen they won't really loose money, or do you think I should tell them something else? I live in Italy and the customer care has always been very helpful in handling my problems, they've always called back etc etc..
What should I say and ask Dell when I call the customer care? Thank you for your help and tips
Francesco

for free I don't think so, but if you pay them(to put the screen on etc.) I think you can do it.
I personally would tell them the screen is not very good and is too difficult to read, who knows they might replace it like you want, and you only have to pay the difference not an entire new screen and labor? -
Generally, companies don't allow you to upgrade just just the difference in price because they end up with a refurbished screen, and you get a shiny new one, so scratch that plan.
Although, seeking screen replacements myself due to random dead pixels. I have the WXGA screen originally, and recently the last screen they sent me was a WSXGA+.. Free.. So you can give it a shot. -
-
nada, they won't do it Oh well, I tried.. thanks anyway
-
What if it mysteriously develops a fault? They will have to replace it then under warranty
-
-
They're not gonna upgrade you even if you pay for it. They just won't do it.
Heck, even for a MINOR os change, they want you to return the system and rebuy.
Only way you will have the screen you want is if you buy it. -
-
It's a shame your out of your cooling off period, you have all the power before the 30 days are up!

The techs told me they don't replace with anything but exactly what you originaly have when I wanted a screen replacement. Even though I only asked them to send me a LG not any other brand, nor a upgrade to say the least.
I had a WXGA, LG, Glossy screen originally. Guess what my first replacement was? A Samsung WXGA, Matte finish. It was grainy and I did not like matte, so I called and they sent another new one out, it arrived the next day. It was a Samsung WSXGA+ Glossy.
I can take pictures of the slips, if no one believes me. I plan to stick this to Dell as proof if they give me any B.S down the road.
Anyways my point is, don't buy into that crummy ass line. Frankly, I honestly think they likely just grab any screen that fits your laptop (14/15/17 inch), then tosses it out the door. So it seems anyways in my experience.
So, simply FIND a reason to get you're screen exchanged, get them to send a replacement screen kit and you'll more then likely end up with a high resolution screen. Say it's grainy or something stupid.. light leakage, anything.
If you're into fraud as some people like to call out here, cause damage to get it replaced.. LOL -
So it's not fraud that Dell will replace your screen with one that is worse?
-
LMFAO.
despite the horrible reputation that Samsung has with displays, I'll come to there defense that the screen was gorgeous. Zero light leakage, best I've ever seen on a LCD. Amazing color reproductions. Sexy resolution as well. But the coating applied to the outside was to thick so it appeared oily. But - blame quality control for that at Samsung.
But you completely missed my point. Look at the verity of screens I got within 2 days. It's possible he could get a LG version, which then would be flawless I'd imagine.
So if he's up to doing it himself, keep requesting screen replacement kits until they send one he likes, then he can install it and be happy. When you get a replacement, open it up, plug the cable in and see how it looks. If it blows send it back, if it ain't what you want send it back, call and ask for another. Takes like 15 minutes.
At least my idea could work.... But is it all worth it? It lays in the eyes of the beholder I guess. -
I have also noticed that Dell will bend over backwards to satisfy you before your 30 days are up.
After that, oh boy. -
But how the heck did you get so many screen replacements.. didn't Dell start asking questions after awhile? I mean, I can't just keep telling them I don't like the screen, can I?
Plus, what was the problem with ur LG WXGA screen? -
Well the one I had with my system when I first got it, was perfect, no problems with the system at all.
But one day was walking and using it, and dropped it. It landed right on the edge of the screen, cracked the screen then in the process, it happen so fast as I was walking it got kicked.. Then skittered across my gravel driveway. I just stood in shock for a minute thinking "@#$%...", to say the least.
So Dell replaced the bezels and screen, no charge, amazingly.. Everything arrived I installed it and everything was good again. Another LG and shiny new bezels. But recently, I've gotten more and more dead pixels. So being a graphics designer and such, it complicates the process of designing when you got dead pixels over everything.
So that's why I took the dive for the new screen replacement.
Frankly, if it's under warranty - I'll saturate the hell out of the usage of the warranty before it expires-- I might add.
The first call, dell has a follow up--a quality control official called me and asked me to take pictures of the dead pixels and further explain the issues due to the CSR's being a little 'duh' when it some to the 'technicals'. All was good and the first screen was sent. It arrived was the wrong screen (matte), plus terribly grainy. On a scale of 1 - 10 it was about a 195...yea, that bad. I called and they had a second screen on my doorstep the next day. But this one was a WSXGA+, pretty much flawless for the coating on the outside making it appear grainy.
Point is, they just grab any screen that works with your machine. Just keep requesting new screens until a fancy WSXGA+ or WXGA+ or w.e you want pops up. Bound to happen right? You might be lucky and it will be a LG version. -
lol ok, too bad my screen doesn't have any problems (except for vertical view point) so really I dunno what I am going to tell them to get it changed..
btw I think I might aswell wait for jan to come cuz this period will probably be pretty slow for shipping and stuff -
Yeah, that's what I'm planning on doing. The last screen I got was pretty eff'n nice but the grainy coating applied to the outside was unbearable for me because I'm a perfectionist. I was almost tempted to put up with it just to have that big resolution.
So still with my dead-pixel LG. Gonna request more after the x-mas rush is gone. Last few shipments I've had over the last few weeks I've been stuck picking up - stupid post office is like 30km away. Not worth the ware and tare on the car nor the gas money wasted.
Complain it's grainy and has terribly viewing angels and you want a screen replacement kit (IF YOU THINK you can install the screen yourself - it's pretty easy..). If they feed you the crap that they stopped sending those just ask for supervisor/management permission. Works all the time. -
-
Yup, they got manuals on the site. I was gonna write up a guide but got caught up in this headphones jack thing lol.
Basically, just disconnect the attana cables, disconnect the screen cable, take the hinge screws off and slide the screen out. Then remove the 6 screws on the bezel, split the bezel apart, then remove the 8 screws that hold the screen in. Then tada, theres your LCD. Repeat the process in reverse to reinstall. -
The thing is, I am coming from a 15" flat screen @1024x760 and so when I saw 1440x900 it just seemed too much, but now I realize that it would be perfect for me.. -
LOL I hear ya. I am use to my 15" LG desktop monitor, I hardly ever use my 30" Eizo unless it's a important job where color reproduction has to be flawless.
So I was use to the 1024/768 resolution. Then as soon as I got the WSXGA+, and maxed it out I was like "omg..@#$%..", lmao.. They need to design LCD's with multiple native resolutions..
It's not 'impossible' so to speak. Just impossible to get companies to upgrade you later after purchase. You could just buy the screen but then you got a $200 extra LCD panel laying around.
Let us know what you decide and what you do. -
Oh well, I guess I'll be more carefull next time I buy a pc.. I'm happy with the rest of it though.. the HD is a bit too small so my next step is going to be upgrading that (it's the basic 120GB 5400 rpm), but the rest is great for the price I got it for! -
Having the same problem.
-
-
Of course ill let you know goes. -
-
Nope, they just won't do it.. I guess I'm stuck with this screen for a bit.. hopefully my moms Acer (which is 3-4 years old) will die soon so I can give her this one and get myself a new one hehehe
Merry xmas to all, have a good one -
lol did you say the screen had dead pixels or something? Then push for a screen replacement kit if it fails, ask for management permission.
-
-
I just don't get why people insist on trying to get their own way when they are not in any remote possible way entitled to it.
Just amazes me! -
Dell should replace screens for people who got the low resolution versions. Dell should have not released the XPS1530 with just one screen option - it was stupid and Dell should repay its customers for that BS.
-
Dell is in no way responsible for when their customers purchase. The only BS is trying to blame Dell for jumping the gun on your purchase and then being stuck with something you aren't happy with.
Let your money speak for you. Don't buy unless it's exactly what you want, and if Dell doesn't have what you want, go elsewhere. -
lol i thought I had made it clear that I realized the mistake was mine and I was just hoping for some good luck, that's all..
For koo: mine isn't a xps so I have no excuse, when I bought this Vostro there were 4 options, so the mistake was mine.
for Khris: I hear you, I just didn't think that I wouldn't have liked the screen this much. The other WXGA screens around seemed nice, but this one is grany and the viewing angle suxs, and I heard that the WXGA+ is better, that's all.. I already said (a few posts ago) that I'm gonna keep the screen and shut up now, since I got a final answer from Dell. Peace -
By the way, I just discovered that Dell Italy does NOT send screen kits, they always send a technician over..
Ok well Iìm stuck with the WXGA screen, it's not bad at all (except for the lousy vertical viewing angle) but I'd love to have a little extra space.. next year hopefully I will be buying a new laptop (this one will go to my mom and the old Acer will bite the dust), and I'll be sure to visit the forum BEFORE I make an order hehehe
thank you all for the help, have a happy new year
Convincing Dell to change my screen
