This may be a dumb question, but is the Inspiron 1520 suppose to make a constant noise when running? It sounds like a the fan is running all the time, even when I first start the computer. When I put my hand beside the vents on the left side I can feel some heat blowing out.

This may be normal. But if it is, I would have to say my old HP Pavillion zt3000 was much quiter. You could only hear the fan occasionally. Other than this the only other noise it made was when it was accessing data on the hard drive.

It my brand new Dell continues to make this noise, I will probably have to return it. It's way too annoying.

The fan runs all the time but the noise depends on speed of fan(which again depends on temp. inside laptop). So if temp inside laptop is high then it will run at high speed. But since in your case on booting only you hear fan noise I think there is problem with heat sink inside laptop. Also you should use temp. monitoring software like speedfan to monitor temp. of your laptop. If you find high temp. with little use of laptop then you shouldn't delay in calling dell.

i suggest downloading i8kfangui (google it). it is a fan utility program that allows you to monitor and your temps as well as control the speed and frequency of the fan. the most important thing to consider is that the heatsink is damaged or not seated correctly. if that is the case, that will account for the constant running of the fan. of course temps will be on the high side as well since the heat is not being properly expelled.

as for the comment above about "the fan runs all the time..." i dont know if that is the case for the 1520 but i know on my 1420, the fan does NOT run all the time. there are times when it is completely off and then only comes on when it has to per my fan control settings in i8kfangui.

Also make sure the vents are clean and there is not dust buildup keeping the hot air inside the laptop

Good advice, but I would hope that he wouldn't be having a dust buildup problem in at most 2-3 months since having it (likely less, since he said it was his "brand new" laptop).

I don't think that it is normal for the fans to run constantly from turn on unless the ambient temperature is REALLY high, or if you are running it on a bed or something where it can't get any ventilation. Make sure there are no obstructions blocking the vents, and if you're using it somewhere that tends to be warm, like an upstairs bedroom or someplace, try taking it somewhere cooler and see if the symptoms persist.

If all that results in no reduction in fan usage, I would give dell a call and see what they have to say about it.

My Vostro 1500 (which is the same machine, after all) always have the fan on when it's on AC power. It is very quiet, but it always on. Romm temperature ranged from 27 to 22 °C.

The only time the fan stopped running was when it was running on battery.

And yet the temperatures are fairly low, both on AC and on battery: cpu temps is mostly in the 36-39°C range while on battery and in the 36-46°C range while on AC. My T7300 is almost always running at 800 MHz throttle with a voltage of 0,85 V.

I have never seen in C4 state. Could it be that Dell inhibithed the low poer mode of the processor to hide the dreadful cpu whine?
How can I make sure the CPU will go into 'deep sleep', like Snowhite?

I just got a brand new Dell Inspiron 1520. I experience the problem with the constant fan noise.

The constant background fan noise is there since the second I switch it on. Like an engine of a car, or simply the fan in a desktop computer. My old laptop is much more silent than this. Of course, it's not extremely loud, but when you switch off the computer you go "ah, silence at last."

Is this correct behaviour for Inspiron 1520? The above instruction of checking the fan speed, etc, does not help (or work) for my laptop. The fan noise seem to be out of my control.

I just want this noise to stop!! I didn't by a desktop computer, I bought a laptop. So why this noise, even from cold start up in a below average room temperatur room? The CPU is at below 35 degrees C. Noise all the time..
