    Hi,

I am considering buying an XPS M1210. I have read probably all the reviews available online but I still have a few questions.

I am mostly wondering about the noise level of the machine. I expect it to run relatively hot, especially under CPU/GPU load and I am ok with that. How is the heat and noise performance during normal tasks, i.e. browsing, word processing? Do the fans run all the time? How loud are they when they run? Is there a considerable difference between integrated and dedicated graphics in this regard? (All else equal, I will go with dedicated graphics, but I might re-consider this if it dedicated graphics render the computer hot and/or loud all the time).

Also, are there any coupons available online for m1210 (I could not find any). I seem to remember that they could be found occasionally in the past, but I am not sure how things are with the new pricing system.

    Thanks in advance.

SEarch on this forum for all your answers.

Quick reponse on the coupons...no there are none for the m1210. But if you have an education connection you can get the EPP discount...its minimal though.

I have integrated graphics, and it idles in the low 40's, maxes out at around 60 while gaming (yes I game with the integrated card). There is no noise, with the fans on low. Ive never heard the fans kick up to high unless I use a fan control program. I use it in class, and it is pretty much inaudible.

Thanks. Exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Anyone with dedicated graphics willing to comment?

I gamed CS Source and Starcraft on my Core 2 Duo m1210 with 7400 Go, and yes it does get hot, but not to the point where you feel uncomfortable. And don't you worry, the fan noises are very quiet! You'll rarely hear any significant fan noises that'll bother you. Don't worry, there are no moo-ing like the Macbooks... you can count on that!

My GPU peaks at about 85 under heavy gaming load, and the bottom of the lappy gets pretty hot. A cooling pad would certainly reduce both. In the classroom, when I'm taking notes, web browsing, etc, the CPU slowly climbs to around 55, then the fan comes on low to bring it down into the 40s. The low fan speed is inaudible unless the classrom is silent.

m1210 is the best dam 12incher available.

    - it does run hot to 70degree while gaming, but then wat can we expect?. core2duo + geforce 7400 = heat,
    - there is hardly any fan noise

get the AV package to get a better screen , and yes i do have dedicated graphics

Realize the Core 2 Duo runs at about the same temperatures of the Core Duo which runs cooler than the Pentium M. I don't see why eople sitll automatically think Dual Core CPU equals heat, that was one of the very big things about the Core Duo, it was Dual Core and ran cool while still maintaining good battery life.

I'm not saying with a more powerful GPU in a 12" shouldn't produce heat, it will but it has become a bit annoying that people keep saying 'it's Dual Core, why wouldn't it be hot?'

Sorry, a bit of a pet peeve of mine..
