From the looks of it, yes. It converts S-Video to RCA. You might be able to find something cheaper on Amazon though.

Neither one of those does audio. Audio cannot be transferred over the S-Video cable.

yes it does - the s-video output is 7 pins, not the usual 4 - and the extra 3 pins allow it to transmit through component/spdif (so both video and audio).

yes svideo in itself cannot do audio but the ports on the side of dell laptops are not standard svideo the have pins extra http://pinouts.ru/Video/dell_vidout_pinout.shtml
this is a standard svideo pinout

the dell adapter in the description says it is component with spdif (analog hd video with digital audio)
the adapter from amazon will let you plug the adapter into your tv then run an svideo cable from the laptop to the adapter true you will also nee something like this
    http://www.amazon.com/RCA-Stereo-Audio-Cable-RCA-Type/dp/B00021ENY6
    to do the audio

i just bought the dell dongle (s-video to component/spdif) for AUD10 including delivery - should arrive later this week - so hopefully will be able to get high definition video to the tv, along with digital audio to the receiver (rather than analogue non-5.1 channel audio using the headphone jacks).

    here's hoping it actually works.

This dongle does output audio. It outputs dolby digital and dts . IT also outputs to your hdtv.

I know because I bought it and it works beutifully.

    fantastic - thanks.

do you know if you can output video using the hdmi cable and separately output the audio using the dongle?

i want to connect the hdmi to the tv for video, and then use the dongle for sound - but not sure if the laptop can split the signal (or whether you have to use the dongle for both video/audio - in which case i'll be using component for video, not hdmi...)
