A fellow notebookforums member got a chance to try out Merom in his E1705. Since the A01 bios stated that if a un recognized CPU was inserted, it wouldnt work. He installed Merom, and his CPU was not at the capable speeds. He ween ahead a tried the A01 bios, and it was a success, Merom will work, and its just the mater of you putting it in the system without updating anything.
M90 users stated it wont work, so M1710's are questioning too if it will work.
Only time will tell

That's interesting. It makes me even happier that I bought my E1405 when I did. Now I have the option to (maybe down the road) upgrade the processor; certainly not something I would have thought of being able to do when I bought it!
-
Yep. dell wont release new systems just to have Merom, they are going to add it as a spec option im sure of.
Why would Dell release new versions of all these systems to just have merom? A new version of the m1710/M1210/M2010? lol
So i think they would release BIOS for the new models, that will have the Merom in it. But its confirmed: AO1 Bios support Merom on the Inspiron line
M90 doesnt support Merom on A01 (unless a faulty chip)
XPS's are fair game still -
Oh wow. I hope the XPS line gets it. Love to drop a chip in there faster than 1.83 in a year or so once prices drop. That would just be the icing on the purchase cake.
-
All Inspiron laptops with A01 bios will support Merom? Nice to know with my E1405 but i'm concerned about taking my laptop apart...
-
Swapping CPUs in the E1405 seems fairly straightforward: LINK
-
wow, its just a little cover and the CPU is under it? interesting
a CPU upgrade isnt hard, and dell has instructions on what to do. -
I will probably end up dropping my notebook somehow. I know it will happen, it is inevitable, and when it happens I'll just get the updated version of the E1705 with a Merom.

Would it work for the newer Latitudes specifically D620? And how hard is it to do so by ourselves or will best buy or the like do it for a fee? Thanks.
-
Doesnt the XPS have the same chipset as the 9400?
-
If the 64-chip works on the current laptops, then I think Dell will use the current models and have like a special marketing name, like e1505-64, for the new chips. It is cost-efficient to use the current models, if they work with the 64-bit, because why go waste money on designing new models if the current models work and are great sellers?
-
But with the XPS and the 9400, they are in a way, similiar

In all, Dell will release BIOS for Merom for the systems. But right now, the A01 bios in fact work for the E1705. -
I'm going to Vegas in about a week (with my e1405 A01 Bios...) i may be able to try a merom out in the e1405....if i can, i will take pics and post/report them here. -
This is what i'm waiting for! My E1405 runs A01 bios and since l noticed upgrading the cpu will be a snap l can't wait to see how Merom will work in this. -

This Is Great News! I So Psyched! I Am So Glad I Ordered My E1705 Now, Instead Of Waiting For The Merom To Come Out. I Can Enjoy This Beautiful Machine Now, And Then When Merom Comes Out, I Can Just Swap In The New Chip. Man I'm So Excited. Now I Just Have To Wait For This Baby To Arrive.

Confirmed: Merom works fully in E1705.
