Can people who actually have the 1520 find out if they got the GDDR3? I mean there are a couple of people on this forum who actually received either a 1420 or a 1520.

yes and their numbers mathematically compare to ddr2. There has been threads about this before.

how do you call getting a 8600gt ddr 2 a rip off at the price point you're getting?

dell shoulda just never said any specs and all this wouldn't have happened

i just don't think people should make such a big deal out of it

other notebook manufactures said nothing about the vram

You seem to have something wrong with your caps lock...

    1. No it is not the best deal anymore. If you want a certain graphic capacity it is now useless. And it is not up to you to decide, it is up to the customer based on correct information.
    2. I don't think Dell would sell much if they only advertised it as "a computer" without any specifications. But maybe you would buy?

This thread is about the misleading information. I have contacted Dell several times about this and they have made empty promises to fix it. I don't want this behaviour to spread or be accepted, do you?

it is the best deal at that price point

if you want ddr3 "graphic capacity" then spend a few hundred more for the g1s which will net you a few more fps if you want

they don't have to list whether the vram is ddr 2 or 3 nor do they have to give the bandwidth of the gpu

people bought c90 notebooks not knowing whether the vram is 2 or 3

    okay

next time, i guess dell should just not provide information at all

I dont know what to say to you, i can not understand how you could possibly think it is ok for a company to say they sell one thing, and give you something different. Other manufactures also aren't lying about their vram, i would be much happier if dell didnt say anything about their vram because then people would not be thinking they are getting ddr3! This is not ok, just because you can get something at a good price does not mean that you should get something different! i am paying dell to give me what they say they are going to give me, not for them to give me something that i did not want.

i'm saying that even if its ddr2, its still the best deal you can get, and you should stop whining

let see you get ddr3 anywhere else for less

you can always cancel as no one is forcing you to buy it

other manufactures aren't lying cause they don't say anything about it

if you have such an objection to lying, then why don't you go and write something on the forums of "crossing over" about that guy talking to dead spirits.

I can't believe that you people would rather dell say nothing and be blissfully ignorant then to at least learn something and still know you got the best deal you can at this price point

Whats not to get? I called dell and they said the 8600 GT has DDR2. I even tried a few online chat reps.

What I don't get is how you don't get it.

But I do believe people have been told it is GDD3 and the stats on the site do point to it being GDDR3 and that's what I am upset at. I really don't care that I was told it is DDR2 and I made my purchase full well knowing what I was getting. I care that this is false advertising and it should be stopped.

They only mention the memory bandwidth in one place and most people wont even click the link to find it.

Its not as bad as people are making it out to be. Most people wont even click that link.

On the selection screen for the vid cards it does not state what speed the memory is in. only the help section link.

Stop making this bigger then it is.

This isn't about how good of a deal the 1520 is, it's about how Dell lied about what we're going to get for this great deal.

What if the processors we got from Dell didn't run at the frequency they were listed at? "Hey, let's pay 150 more to upgrade to 2GHz!" *2 weeks later, laptop has arrived* "Wait a minute, it only clocked up to 1.5GHz!"

How the hell could that ever have been 'researched' better? We looked on the site from which we were purchasing and it listed the information. We took the seller's word for it, and it proved to be wrong. You can't make up for a company's wrongdoings by saying "Wellllllll... you still got a pretty good deal, stop complaining that you didn't get what you paid for."
Because that was a show based purely on entertainment, and nothing on fact.

That is a bad comparison. If you lwoer the cpu speed you wont get a faster processor then the one before it.

The 8600m still has 16 more STREAM PROCESSORS then the 8400. Its still faster then dells 8400gs (wich nobody has posted yet if its the same specs as what the help section states for the 8400m)

What part of its still faster then the 8400m do you not understand?

Its still has the 16 more stream processors then the 8400m. the benchmarks dont tell the whole story. The DELL 8600m could still be double the speed of the 8400m depending on how the game is programmed.

Also wikipedia states that in most specifications the 8600gt is still double the performance in most things still.

    1) if you don't like your good deal, you can cancel and get no deals at all

let see you get a "great deal" else where

    2) you analogy doesn't fit well. you are still getting the same 8600gt CORE but you're getting slower ram. a better analogy would be getting the same cpu at same clock and same architecture but less cache (which like the slower ddr2 ram, doesn't affect real applications much).

i can't, for the love of god, comprehend how you're all still whiny babies about this

you all seem to live in dream happy land where morals are everything

you haven't even seen some of the business practices MDG does, or MS or intel

i don't believe that any of you whiners even knew that you had gotten jipped untill you found this site and now you're all pissy about it cause you're 3dmarks are a little lower than the asus g1s which costs hundreds more

What part of "'it is still faster' isnt relevant to this discussion" do you not understand?

if I had an option between a 20MPG car and a 70MPG car for $5000 more, and I spent the $5000 more, and it turned out the car only got 30MPG instead of 70MPG, "It still gets more MPG" would still be completely irellevant to the fact that I didnt get what I paid for and was lied to.

I hope that makes it clearer.

Everyone is missing the point. It doesn't matter how big or small of a deal you make it out to be, Dell didn't deliver as advertised. Many people they wouldn't notice, but what about those that did?

    Edit: mtyler, good analogy.

There's no purpose in telling people to cancel their orders or shut up. It's not about that.

I'm not canceling mine - It's principle. How can you condone a company advertising one thing but selling another. It's wrong. But I guess like so many other things in this great country, things are wrong but we are told to shut up. Please... everyone who isn't happy that it is DDR2 should make their voices heard.

Im not cancelling mine. Im still holding out hope that dell will deliver A] what they advertised, and B] what their agent promised me.

I will give them the benefit of the doubt until my order arrives. If they honor their word, I will be very happy, and will tell everyone how satisfied I am.

Alright this argument is not very good. I didn't buy the 8600 gt only knowing it was better than the 8400, i bought it "knowing" that it is the BEST gaming card i can get into a 15.4" laptop, excluding w/e the c90s does. What dell is doing is wrong, they need to fix their website, which isn't happening, and give people their compensation. And that is it.

However, c'mon guys this is gonna happen, it is wrong, you call them out on it and move on. There is no reason to have a big long thread arguing that people are getting ripped off and such. We got "jipped" and now we have the right to compensation. Call dell, talk to them and do what you can to get that fixed. But the way this thread has gone it has only shown the ignorance of some, and the immaturity of others. Arguing on a thread will do little to resolve anything.

What I don't get is why they skmped on the memory.

There's obviously no shortage of GDDR3, it's on tons of graphics cards. Perhaps this application uses a different kind of GDDR3 chip? I doubt it.

And the price couldn't be that much different? Hell, I'd pay another $50 for the GDDR3.

Maybe running the processor with GDDR3 heats up too much or there's some other technical glitch.

Someone at Dell knows the answer.

There have been reported problems with heat of the gpu, but i have been told it is not true. I have read that the g1s's have overheated and some had attributed this to the gddr3. Otherwise dell wanted to provide the "consumer" grade card probably.

Ahh, that's interesting.. was it a common problem on the ASUS, any recalls? You're probbably right about the "consumer" grade. If it was GDDR3 and people started overclocking they might start to hit XPS levels.

Even on the ASUS C90, the memory is clocked at 400MHz. Seems like the G1S is the only one with the full 700MHz so far?

Based on the link below and other things I've read I'd say the diff between DDR2 and GDDR3 is about a 10-15% performance hit .

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html?&or=&search=&sort=3dmark06

What buckeye said about "consumer grade" is starting to make more sense. Check out the 8700M-GT numbers on that page- almost 7950GTX levels. Everything I've read about the 8700M is that its just an overclocked 8600M. Who would buy a top level XPS if you can get nearly the same performance for under $1k?

I haven't seen a side by side comparison of the two graphic cards with different types of memory. It'd be interesting and my guess is there would be a FPS difference, but not a huge one.

There have been some reports of heat issues with the G1S, but its hard to say if its the GPU or a problem with fans or heat sinks. I think the biggest difference between the G1S and the Dell and Compal is battery life. I'd rather have the balance of performance and battery life. But a hard core gamer - who the G1S is geared for - probably appreciates the extra speed.

I haven't seen the comparison either. I have a buddy who owns a G1S - he has no complaints in the graphics department but does tell me that the fans rev up and there is a lot of heat generated when playing games. Then again, it's clearly geared towards that and his battery barely cracks 1.5hrs when the GPU is at full throttle.

I really don't see the comparison between the two laptops despite having similar hardware. They look different and are aimed at two different segments. The G1S is directly positioned for the gamer, the 1520 is aimed at someone who will game but who's main priority is not gaming, more so for entertainment, rendering, and other uses. The 8600 GT with DDR2 will deliver all that, but for that extra little juice you need the G1S - or if gaming really is your #1 use, definitely better off waiting for the 8800 in 60 or so days.

To everyone concerned, the Dell Inspiron 1520 ships with the Geforce 8600M GT with GDDR2 memory not GDDR3 as stated earlier by Dell as i have not received my system yet but i can check online the packing slip as it clearly states the GDDR2 memory with the serial number 490-10653 (this is the UK serial number)

Yes, everyone has been able to find references to both DDR2 and GDDR3.

You find a reference to DDR2, someone else finds a reference to GDDR3. I contact dell directly and they take great pains to assure me and promise me that my card will have GDDR3 - another person talks to someone else, and they say they think it is DDR2.

Im pretty sure it will be DDR2 - but the online packing slip isnt any more informative than the other references that have "clearly stated" GDDR3
