    Hey everyone,

My Mom called me in a panic, saying her computer locked up...

She said she was working with just the battery, typing a report of some kind, and the battery died. When she turned it back on with the AC power, the computer asked her for a password and said it was locked. When I set up the computer for her, I do not remember entering a password at all....

Anyone have any ideas about what has happened here?

I suggested she call Dell for now, and see where that takes her....

    Any ideas?

Well, if there is a password (that may or may not actually supposed to be there) and you can't get in, Dell techs are the only ones that are legally allowed to help you here. But you'll need proof that you own the machine before they help you with that...so be ready to provide that info.

That being said, a virus might have gotten in onto the computer...but I'm not too sure how though. Also, the shutdown might have been some type of "go to hibernate with 5% of battery remaining" thing...Windows does have that measure to save your information in an emergency.

If it is the "Computer Locked" screen though (as if you pressed Win+L), it will show the same dialog box regardless of if a password is enabled or not. If there really should be no password, just type the user name, leave the password blank, and hit enter.

    Hope that helps!
