    Hey guys,

For about two days now, i've been having a lot of trouble formatting my HD on my Inspiron 1720 with Windows Vista. It would always freeze on the "completing installation" screen.

For any of you guys that are having trouble with this... theres a simple fix. Simply boot up from the Dell Vista CD and when it asks which HD you would like to Format, there is an option to Load Drivers. Use the Dell Drivers installation CD to install the drivers then continue on with the installation. Vista will load perfectly...

    :) :D :)

    Good Luck!

    Sounds good.

I have a question about a way that I am thinking about reformatting when I get my Vostro. I reformatted my friends HP by putting in the Windows Anytime Upgrade disc and booting from that. It has every version of windows on it. I deleted all of the partitions. I then combined them, then just installed on the fresh new partition. Everything worked fine. From what I hear about "reformatting" or "fresh installing" that WILL NOT work on Dell's. Correct me if I'm wrong but people have been talking about slipstreaming the SATA drivers. So from what RINKU said is that you can enter your SATA drivers from the dell utilities disc...right? So if I were to reformat off the Windows Aytime Upgrade disc will I have to use the utilities disc to insert the SATA drivers that way it will pick up the hard drive.

Im just a little confused because people are coming up with so many different ways to reformat it seems like.

    thanks.

that just might work.the problem is that vista installation, they cant load the hard drive drivers, so you load the drivers first, then do the installation

In response to your "So if I were to reformat off the Windows Aytime Upgrade disc will I have to use the utilities disc to insert the SATA drivers that way it will pick up the hard drive" . Yes you must used the utilities disc in order for the drive to be picked up by windows

hmm didn't have that problem when I formatted mine, I didn't have to load drivers for my 1520. I used the reinstallation disk that Dell provided for me and the drivers were already on the disk, I didn't have to load any drivers.
Any non Dell reinstallation disk will require you to load drivers though I believe.

Yes you can slipstream drivers and updates into a disk, and is useful for installing XP especially

Usually people have a hard time when they are trying to format a SATA HD. Is yours a SATA?

This really needs to be PINNED because I post this same exact thing (written by me) at least once a day here...

That problem is because the OS can't see the drive, but it does because you installed it...right? Typically, you assign RAID drivers and stuff so you can install on that drive because it doesn't see it...but this gets confusing, because it actually sees it. When it asks you where to install, you'll see an option to load drivers - you want to go to support.dell.com and download the Intel Matrix Storage Manager and load the drivers in there prior to installing. The problem is you need a special AHCI driver, and not the generic Microsoft one. Yes, this is really frustrating and I was the first person to post about this in the forums - I called Dell and they had no idea what I was talking about, I had to figure all of this out on my own...

If you don't know how to do this, or anything like that...and don't mind taking a *small* performance increase for ease just go into your BIOS and see the HDD operation mode from AHCI to ATA and then you can install Vista using ANY disk!

The direct download link for Intel Matrix Storage Driver is here:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=41&fileid=205611

If you are using a x64 version, the direct download link is here:

    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R154201&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=205616

Oh, and this applies to the 1420, 1520, 1720, m1330, and I assume the m1730 as well ;)

The cd to install the drivers is not the same the OS cd. the drivers for the SATA HD are on a seperate disc.
One is the OS CD, one is the DRIVERS CD. you only need to use the drivers cd, no need to use the DELL OS cd at all

Please go to that post above and see my end post with actual photos of the result...I think you may want to be ensuring ACHI is on with Matrix Storage Manager installed.

    Any questions...pm or post here.

So...restart the computer and see if it starts. Some will. Dont hot reset. Turn it off, wait then restart.

If it wont, reinstall and when you come to the partition window, place your drivers disk in and click on install files/drivers.

You want to install Intel Matrix Storage Manager.

    First things first:
Flamenko, thank you for the great job you do informing us all.

Question: If you've already re-installed vista in ATA mode, is it possible to change it back to ACHI w\cache after the install is complete??????

    {I tried to last night, and got a BSOD when I changed it to ACHI w\cache}

I would hate to go through the whole process again just to make that one adjustment.

I have a similar issue. Does this also correspond to the vista installation error in which the installation process goes fine, but on the initial start of vista(vista loading screen with the black screen and small loading bar) it freezes and a BSOD shows up. I get this when I try to install vista ultimate on a laptop. It then goes into a loop in trying to start vista for the first time and BSOD and restarting again.

Does anyone know if installing the dell drivers prior to vista installation get rid of this BSOD during initial boot after installing vista?

yay finally i resolve this irritating problem (freezing at "Completing installation", loading windows green bar forever, etc). thanks to rikku6666 for giving me idea to use "Load Drivers" while installation.

its simple. what i did was download the HD controller driver (either SATA or UATA depend on your model) then put in floppy disc. browse the driver when "Load Drivers" then clik "Next" to start vista installation. Make sure do not remove your floopy disc while installation in progress. once the installation finish u can take a long breathe....piu

I just use the supplied disc

When up to selecting partition, just hit Load drivers, insert your disc (you can take windows install one out), fnd the Intel matrix blahblah driver, click load, re-insert the Windows install disc, than install as you usually would.

im doing it now seeing as i need to re-format
