How do I restore my Vostro 1500 software to the original state in which it was shipped to you from Dell? I followed the directions from the dell manual but there is no option for the "Dell Factory Image Restore"

Windows Vista: Dell Factory Image Restore
Turn on the computer. When the Dell logo appears, press <F8> several times to access the Vista Advanced Boot Options Window.

    Select Repair Your Computer.

The System Recovery Options window appears.

Select a keyboard layout and click Next.

To access the recovery options, log on as a local user. To access the command prompt, type administrator in the User name field, then click OK.

    Click Dell Factory Image Restore.

NOTE: Depending upon your configuration, you may need to select Dell Factory Tools, then Dell Factory Image Restore.

The Dell Factory Image Restore welcome screen appears.

    Click Next.

The Confirm Data Deletion screen appears.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with Factory Image Restore, click Cancel.

Click the checkbox to confirm that you want to continue reformatting the hard drive and restoring the system software to the factory condition, then click Next.

The restore process begins and may take five or more minutes to complete. A message appears when the operating system and factory-installed applications have been restored to factory condition.

Click Finish to reboot the system.

    Question...

    Define original state...
because what if you change partitions?
lets say you create a partition where you save backup files you dont want deleted?
Does the restore only copy over the original location of the OS partition? Does it erase other partition to its original state?

The main reason i'm asking this is because i deleted the Direct Media 2.5GB partition, and replaced that w/ a 25GB partition by shrinking the OS partition (for backup)

Strangely, I've seen more than one Brand new Dell Vostros with NO option for "Dell Factory Image Restore". There is a restore partition, & you do get it activated through F8 key, but no "Dell Factory Image Restore" option is there. Has anyone experienced anything similar to this .. or can anyone help me out in this regard? Thanks a lot.

Like brianj asked, what options are actually available if not "Dell Factory Image Restore"?

My Vostro 1400 also does not have recovery image. The only option is to install from CD/DVD.
