Dell said there is a 5 in 1 card reader in this laptop but I only see a SD card reader. My camera uses a compact flash card along with with many other professional cameras, so that compact flash card reader is a point I considered when i bought this laptop. There is also a latch that when pushed pops out this useless piece of plastic out and I assume this is PCMIA slot. So i dont see a CF reader anywhere.

Is there one on this laptop or will I have to buy a USB CF card reader?

Not to be flip but the fact is the description of the 5 in 1 reader clearly identifies the 5 types of memory it will read. You don't have a CF card reader in the XPS M140, but in my experience your camera likely has a mini-usb port out and a cable that connects direct to the puter. If your camera has usb 2.0 its won't be a whole lot slower than a card reader.

Hoe does it clearly identify that a 5 in 1 doesnt have a CF card reader?

Personally, I would recommend just buying a separate card reader (they have those 10 in 1, 12 in 1, or 158 in 1  or whatever readers). That's what I got and it saves your camera batteries. My camera also uses compact flash and the notebooks I've seen do not have a slot for them.

Even better, get an Expresscard CF adapter for your XPS M140 !!

I got one of these for a friend of mine who has an XPS M140 and was going to travel to Asia. Instead of messing around with an external reader and cable, this is much cleaner and FASTER!!!

    I got it at http://goodmemory.stores.yahoo.net/pcexcocaad.html

They are in San Diego, CA and I can attest to the fact that it works great.

Are you saying the 5 in 1 card reader doesn't read SD? Or the 1405 doesn't come with the 5 in 1?

The card reader in the E1405 reads SD and some others, this card reader was for my desktop. l had a internal reader that l broke in my desktop so l got this to replace it.

Do you know of any places that would sell that adaptor cheaper?

Unfortunately, no. I looked around, but there was nothing cheaper. If you go to their place of business (will call), they will take 10% off, but that is it.

Once more of this kind come out, the price will come down, but right now, you are paying to be the first kid on your block to have one! If you are using hi-speed CF's, though, get the most out of them by using one of these instead of slower USB readers...

I have the M140 also, it lists the types of cards the 5-in-1 reader can use in the manual:

Using the 5-in-1 Media Memory Card Reader

    Media Memory Card Types

The 5-in-1 media memory card reader provides a fast and convenient way to view and share digital photos, music, and videos stored on a memory card.

NOTE: A media memory card is not a bootable device.
The 5-in-1 media memory card reader reads the following media memory cards:
    • Secure Digital (SD) card/SDIO
    • MultiMediaCard (MMC)
    • Memory Stick
    • Memory Stick PRO
    • xD-Picture Card
