Is it safe to close a notebook while it's running, without putting into hibernate or standby? It seems everytime it goes into standby or hibernate it disconnects from the Internet, which is a bit frustrating when just moving around. I can turn off the feature to 'do nothing' when closing the notebook, but is that safe?

    Thank you.

The heat may damage the LCD if you leave your laptop running for a while with the lid closed, i would say if its gonna be less than 15 or so min, its ok. :)

Not a good idea. The laptop may overheat and it's remotely possible to get heat damage on the LCD as usapatriot said.

If you have to do it for some reason once in a while for a few minutes I don't think that it'll explode in your face, but it's definitely not recommended.

What is the main source of the heat, the CPU or hard drive?

I leave my M170 running for hours with the lid closed everyday, and I have yet to damage my LCD. If it does damage the LCD, I believe it should be covered under the warrenty.

Edit: I used to own a gateway MX7515 with an Athlon 64 4000+. When I first bought that notebook, I let it "burn in" by letting it run 24/7 for 1 week straight. I left the lid closed 100% of the time unless I was using it. I also left it closed while gaming on my external monitor. I have sold the laptop, but after almost 1 year, the LCD is still working great (my neighbor owns it, so I still see it occassionaly). I have yet to see solid proof of a "burnt" LCD from having the lid closed. Just use it how you want. If it breaks, thats what a warrenty is for.

CPU and GPU are the main sources of heat.
E1705 doesn't run that hot so I don't think you would have an issure running it closed, but still I think that is better avoided. I'm not sure how heat damage on the lcd would be considered a 'factory defect' and covered under dell's limited warranty.

If a notebook is getting hot enough to damage the LCD, I would consider that a factory defect. These notebooks arn't supposed to damage themselves from the heat they produce.

lol, I looked, but I can't find any sources saying its safe. I also can't find anything from dell saying not to do it. Its basically up to the user. I can tell you one thing though, if my system's screen was "damaged" from using my laptop with my lid closed, I would call dell and complain. I have been doing this for a year, and I have yet to damage an LCD.

Pardon me for sticking my nose in this thread (especially since I won't own a laptop for another few days!) ...

... but I don't see the heat from CPU/GPU damaging the screen with the lid closed. I'd tend to think that the backlight bulb would generate more heat )or at least as much heat).

    FWIW

My last dell was super hot all the time and the fan would run very often, it was just that way (dell 1100 inspiron 2.4ghz) I left the lid closed all the time without going to standby and or hibernate for 2 YEARS.

It never hurt the screen or the laptop. It will not cause issues!
