I have a new Western Digital 120 gb 5400 rpm hdd to my dell d630, which was given by a friend b/c he couldn't use it anyway. My previous hdd is ok, but I need a larger one.
The hdd has a clicking noise on power up and doesn't properly ID in Windows.
I tried to boot up from the dvd drive and it's not working. Is there anything I can do to repair it ?

    Thanks,
    Simona

Have you completely reformatted it and reinstalled your OS of choice?

Well, like Ayle said, (some) clicking at startup is normal.

Have you partitioned and formatted it?
Windows won't see it if it isn't formatted.

Don't forget to disable sata/ahci in the bios if you're planning to install xp, otherwise the disk will stay invisible.

    Hello, again !
I am planing to use the new Western Digital SATA hdd as external, in an enclosure. However, it appears invisible in "my computer". Is there any tool to make it visible? Or, how to disable sata in the bios, as Ayle says?
    Thanks again !
