    on the left hand side when it is relatively quiet I am able to hear a slight, almost clicking, noise. maybe once every few minutes. I want to know if I am just being super critical of my new laptop, or if this is something that others have experienced.

    I have an M1530 as well with a Seagate 7200RPM 160GB drive. I have tried to put it on Performance using the BIOS but that did not help. I don't want to put it to Quiet because I am a performance nut. I have read the thread and to my knowledge there is no solution for the Seagate drives on the M1530. Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

    I just did it too and so far so good.
    As far as finding out the manufacturer of your drive:
    Start->Control Panel->System and Maintenance->Device Manager->Disk Drives

    Open that up and it will show you the details including the manufacturer.

    You read the thread? Which one? (Obviously not mine)
    What kind of "clicking" do you experience? Are you running 32bit or 64bit? Did you try NHC or hdparm?
