I have a friend who owns a vostro 1400 that came with vista. She tried to do a clean install with a retail copy of win xp but it doesn't seem to work. It says the driver doesn't recognize xp or something to that effect. Does this mean that the machine has been set to only be able to run vista? Doesn't really make sense if you ask me. Thanks for any advice.

I would think that it cant find the hard drive, this would be because before installing windows would ask for a raid driver or other by pressing f6, she will have to load the driver via a floppy disk (usb floppy drive) before the installation can continue. Have a look on the dell downloads section and see if there is a SATA driver download. try here
