I did a complete reinstall of my just-arrived Inspiron 9400. I downloaded the drivers from dell.com and, after installing WinXp Pro SP2, loaded the drivers in this order:

    1) Dell Notebook System Software (restart)
    2) Ricoh chipset & Intel chipset (restart)
    3) Original Dell Video Driver (restart)
    4) Network Driver (first Broadcom & then Intel)
    5) Audio Driver (restart)
    6) Conexant Modem (restart)
    7) Touchpad (restart)

I don`t know if I missed anything, but the Device Manager shows a "USB Host Controller" installation problem:

Any idea how to solve this? :(

If you update windows, this should fix the USB driver problem. Dell uses the USB drivers from Windows.

hmm, normally that is suppose to work, but it could be the chipset drivers didn't install right.

I would reinstall the chipset drivers (just the Intel, not ricoh) and reflash the BIOS.

I just unistalled all devices one-by-one under the Universal Serial Bus tree and restarted Windows. Windows aumatically detected USB as new hardware and installed it automatically.... simple as that.

What`s weird is that I did 3 clean Windows installs and all of them presented the same problem. Maybe the driver I downloaded from dell.com is faulty or corrupt in some way.

Glad to hear that the problem is fixed.

I really don't know why it would do that either. I know when I reformatted it seemed like I had to reboot several times before all of the drivers would finally install properly.
