Anyone tried doing this? I'm only asking in case some drivers that are ONLY on the DELL disc are required for Vista to install will be missing from my standard retail Vista CD.

I bought Vista Ultimate and find absolutely ZERO redeeming value in Vista besides the worthless eyecandy called "Aero", so there is no way I'm putting up with Home Basic. :)

You can also download the drivers from the dell website.

^Yes, I just wanted to make sure that something crucial for Vista to boot/connect to internet (i.e. SATA/Ethernet/WiFi drivers) was not missing from retail Vista discs.

This may not be completely on topic but does Dell also provide drivers for Windows XP in case I wanted to install that over Windows Vista?

Yes, just change the OS selection when you are browsing through the drivers on their website.

i tried this, make sure you unzip the "intel matrix storage" drivers and have them available on a usb key, telling vista to use them when it installs, otherwise a stock disc=BSoD... unless you go into the bios and change from AHCI to ATA

It does. I just want to install my OWN Vista Ultimate, clean and without their bloatware (all the extra "special partner offer deals") from AOL/Roxio/etc.

I just put Vista Ultimate on my 1520 last night. When you get to the screen to delete partitions/format, do that and then click the "add third party drivers" button and put the Dell driver disk in. It automatically pulls the SATA drivers off that disk. I didn't have any other issues.

^I'll try that jetcity, but i've heard Vista works fine w/o 3rd party AHCI drivers... weird.

I'm guessing this is because santa rosa came out AFTER Vista, and thus, the default ACHI drivers built into Vista installation don't work at all

That's what I thought too because I put Ultimate on my 1505 with no problems. But my first attempt on the 1520 last night failed without loading the third party drivers.

the Dell Vista Ultimate OEM is the exact DVD that Dell ships to customers wh purchased the Ultimate edition upgrade through them. so basically that means on a Dell system, once burned to a bootable type DVD, it will install and be completely legit without the need for an independent serial key. the serial key is an OEM specific (meaning Dell) serial to be used on Dell computers and hardware.

Whats the difference between changing the bios to ATA vs the AHCI driver download. I know I had to turn off some flash thing in the bios as well.

I tried the dvd on my 1520 and it said they were not updated, and cannot figure out how to make the unzipped one work since it gives me setup stuff not raw device driver files (from dell website). I went ahead and turned off flash cache and turned on ATA
