Hello,
I recently bought a certified refurbished Inspiron 1720 from Dell outlet. I contacted Dell Tech support and requested 64 Vista DVD. Amazingly, they sent it out immediately with overnight shipping.
I have completed the install yesterday. Thanks to several threads on this forum, everything went very smoothly. I found all the drivers from different sources without too much hassle.
From what I observe, the system is very stable and works very much faster. I have tested games, applications and some utilities and everything works just great.
I strongly recommend 64 bit Vista since this is direction that Microsoft is taking currently. We will see more and more computers with 64 bit Vista installed from the factory. I am still amazed why Dell is not providing 64vista option on their Home&Home office systems...

Welcome to the GOOD life. Click the x64 sig block.

You can simply order from them a 64bit OS? I have 32bit Vista Premium, would they do me the pleasure?
I have a 1720 Refurbished which I bought off a private seller and still has warranty, if that matters. -
they should. it is Dell's policy to provide 64 bit Vista if requested by the user.
All they asked was my Service tag number and order number. I am not sure if they would send one to you as well since you are not the original owner. but you should try and see... -
I sure hope they do, thanks for the info.
-
I just chatted (online) with dell tech support, and they said my system only supports a 32bit OS. Was she pulling my leg? Should I try another tech?
-
I'm pretty sure she has no idea what she's talking about, you're system is destined to be x64!.
-
hehe, alright, i'll just keep prodding them till i get my install disk =p
-
Hi. Sorry, I will update detailed system later.
Quick question. Recipe7, did you get the 64 bit DVD.
Thanks, Denis.
Inspiron 1720 received today. -
she has no clue. your system supports x64 but Dell does not provide x64 driver support for 1720. You should tell her " I am aware Dell does not provide x64 bit support, I will take care of the drivers myself". then she/he should send you one....
-
I heard they are misleading customers about 1720 being able to run Vista x64 When you request x64 DVD (which actually they have free from Microsoft for every 32-bit license sold) Indian incompetent often tells your laptop configuration is not compatible with x64 or there is no such thing as Home Premium x64 and so on... All these are lies.
You got very lucky you got that DVD, maybe they got scared you would return laptop. How quickly you called them after receiving laptop ? -
the same day....
-
i will also ask for 64 bit. but i am not sure they will provide in INDIA
-
Download Vista Premium x64 OEM from usenet or wherever (and before someone screams piracy actually its not as you have a licence to use it) use your licence key underneath the 1720 to install it and activate it as normal and congrats, your now 64 bit..
Drivers all installed except WiFi which I downloaded from Dell.. no biggie. -
-
If you dont have binary newsgroup access (usenet) try bit torrent, I downloaded x64 premium from usenet ages ago but just now installed it with my key, installed like a dream too where else you can get it I dunno, sorry.
-
Dell rep told me it is illegal to download Vista
-
Dell also tells people that their C2D machines cannot run x64...which is a complete lie. Just b/c "Dell" (or a rep from Dell) says so, does it make it true?
-
well yes ... but if I'm to use OEM license key from 32bit Vista to install/activate 64bit Vista it makes me to wonder what Dell says.
Dell could also offer 64bit Vista download right ? But they do not ... apparently there is some legal issue here or they just like to create problems for customers. -
Dell has been known to send out x64 discs in the mail, free of charge, so I do not believe it was an issue with the OEM key.
It sounds to me like an ignorant Phone-Answerer (as was the case with the instance I mentioned). It's hit and miss with support like that, sometimes you get someone who's a geek and really knows what's up, and other times you get someone who follows screen prompts and when the screen prompts don't answer your question for them, you get responses that may or may not be true. -
when i ask for 32bit to 64bit upgraded OS from dell they told me we dont not sell OS contact Microsoft.
and Microsoft people told me we do not have any information about OEM OS contact dell regarding this. so i think there is no change to get 64bit.
i cant buy new one myself... -
If in doubt, ask Microsoft themselves.. -
-
To download Vista business, I assume that you don't have a licence for it, that would be illegal to install, the reason why i said it was ok for premium x64 is that all versions of the 1720 come with Vista Premium 32Bit as default (unless you upgrade it when you're building your Dell) so the licence is VALID for x64 premium (Single machine install) but if you download Vista Business x64, you wouldnt have the licence for it to be installed, and to install it you would need an illegal key and a way to circumvent the Activation, that information I will not give you as that would be piracy..
-
-
friends i have installed x64 Vista Business successfully and also updated all drivers. soon gonna upgrade my RAM
-
if you installed it with the key on the laptop, I'd check the version you have unless you downgraded to vista business 32bit on order..
-
they don't send the DVD if u have home premium...do they?
-
i had 32bit Vista business so 64bit vista business works well
-
maksa are the drivers available for 64bit vista, i thought dell had no support for vista 64bit drivers
-
yes it is available from different websites u can also try x64. if u need help we are here to provide u drivers
-
ok thanks. i contacted dell last week regarding the 64 bit vista, and they send an email to renew my warranty LoL, i guess i will have to download the dvd from some other source... and how is it maksa is it any better than 32bit in terms of performance and speed..... i just wanted to make sure if its worth the trouble
thanks -
so i purchased pirated cd from local market and installed with my orignal 32bit key and activated too i am happy with performance. i dont know how to take tests. but i use photoshop a lot and now it starts faster then before. so it's worth. you can give a try i have also order 4gb ram to enjoy really great performance -
Just installed Vista Basic x64 on my Vostro 1500 using the key on the sticker. Had no problems with activation and now I see all 4GBs of ram. I am a happy camper. And x64 drivers are not that hard to find.

Hi guys sorry but i am not able to find Inspiron 1720 vista 64 bit driver for bluetooth. can some one help me out?
I have tried drivers of Dell Precision Mobile WorkStation M6300 but it didnt work. -
Just a quick question to those with 64bit OS's and Insp 1720's. Are the 32 bit drivers compatible with the 64 bit operating system? My 1720 is (hopefully) going to be here within two weeks, and I plan on switching to 64bit Vista Premium, but don't know about driver compatibility. If you guys would help me out it'd be GREATLY appreciated. Thank A ton!
-
@Mak: Just go find a driver for Toshiba Bluetooth Stack x64 (google it) and use that one.
@VPR: No, you must find x64 drivers, but it is fairly easy to do so,
Try these links for starters:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=203453
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=194831&highlight=vista+64+drivers -
Thanks for the link. Got the Intel Matrix drivers, dell Wireless-N drivers, Broadcom NIC, nVidia, and touchpad drivers. Unfortuately I'm stuck on the chipset and audio drivers. Both links are dead. Any help?
-
Yeah, go to Dell and select say the XPS 1530, or like th Inspiron 9xxx...basically look for a machine that has Vista x64 as one of the supported OSs, you should be able to find the drivers there. Just make sure the devices you have are the intended devices =D, and you'll be set.
-
oh ok. Well I got my hands on the Intel PM965 drivers from a website Here. Enjoy! As for the audio I'm not sure who made it, so I guess I'll prod around for a while. Thanks for all your help, Meetloaf13

OK for anyone looking for help, I found out that opendrivers.com is REALLY good for these types of things.
-
but at the time of installing driver i get error like this
"plug in bluetooth device and press ok or cancel."
how to activate my system blutooth without driver. some one help please -
guys i found bluetooth device driver for 64 bit.
here it link
unzip the bluetooth driver to C:\dell\drivers\R140135.
Now go to that directory.
You will have 2 folders Win32 & Win 64.\
Choose Win 64
Launch "Inst.exe" and wait until another Fn+F2 prompt will apear.
Close this prompt and the install will finish.
Restart your computer and after Vista boots up you will see in the tray the
bluetooh icon.
Right Click to turn the adapter on and the drivers will be reinstalled.. -
I forgot that I posted on this thread. To answer the question from the first page, no, I have had no luck getting a 64bit OS from Dell, even after 3 attempts.
I will be looking around here a copy of Vista Premium 64bit around here and do the install with my 32bit Key.
I'm hesitant since I have plenty of files that I would like to keep. Also, I am holding back due to the situation with the drivers.
Can anyone list the drivers that are essential when doing a clean install with the 64bit?
Chipset, Ethernet... etc.?
I would greatly appreciate it. -
You'll need Audio (SigmaTel) Ethernet (not sure, I know it's a Broadcom NIC though..), Chipset (Intel PM965), Wireless (Depends on your options), Video (nVidia mobile drivers, search google for them), Touchpad (Synaptics), and the card reader can apprently be updated through Windows Update, otherwise I believe it's a Ricoh. I'm not sure about the optical drive, I don't think it'd need anything other then standard drivers already supplied with the system.
-
Great, thanks. I will be updating in due time.

Hi,
I have been successfully running Vista Ultimate x64 on a Dell inspiron 1501 for a while now.. and have ordered a 1720
Can someone give a rundown of what works 'out of the box' with Vista x64 on the Inspiron 1720, and what needs to be installed?
I have a driver from www.laptopvideo2go.com ready to go for when I get the machine.. does anyone know if Vista complains about these drivers? (not signed etc etc)
Also i saw someone mention an installable bluetooth driver.. is this FULLY functional? i.e. BT can be turned on/off etc? anyone tested this properly?
Any information appreciated -
before u install x64 on 1720 u will need 64bit SATA drivers. otherwise your vista will not start. and you will see some blue screen errors.
Then other drivers u can get from this forum. all you need to do is some search
I am running Vista Business 64x on my 1720 and its working smoothly. -
Ok, SATA...
Are you saying that I can install Vista x64 without SATA drivers, but then it wont start?
What SATA driver do I need and how can I install it? whats the procedure?
Thanks
Clean 64 bit Vista install on 1720
