maybe folks will behave a little better on this one.
...Anyway, I read most of the other thread (but only skimmed the personal banter stuff...must be getting old...I used to enjoy a good forum fishing display).
...and a couple of points that I didn't see brought up...
While I'm not an attorney I do work for them from time to time (and I was raised in the environment since most of my friends and family are) and can tell you that class action status has tightened considerable from abuses such as the nestle water cases and crap like that.
The main point of a class action is to punish companies that violate codified or private law as a deterrent for future transgression.
I'm sure we can all think of a few products that got crap sued out them and they deserved it... anybody up for a game of lawn darts... actually still got a couple for fun. With that said I think there is nothing wrong with doing a little research to find if significant amount of other owners have had the same problem, but your going to have a tough battle with this one. Class action very very expensive to produce and operate... I look at them from a business project point of view... prob of success, NPV over an estimated time, etc. Warranty issues will likely be much harder to prove than something relating to product safety or false advertising. Many times the outcome of the case ends up being decided on who has the better experts...and I can only imagine the torture of reading the deposition of an electrical engineer expert from Dell on motherboard design. There are reasons I decided not to go to law school...
Next point is that Dell has had to deal with this sort of issue on a much bigger scale already. I believe it was the OmniPlex GX280 or something like that, that had a bad batch of capacitors and the Mobos died early. Their bottom line paid dearly from that incident from the extra warranty charges of that year...06 I believe...and their dominance of corporate clients took a hit. As for the power supplies I've been through a few, and I think it's partly my fault and partly theirs. The supply often has to operate right at or above it's rating...I verified this with a meter. I told Apu this on the phone but still got the 65W unit. I am now careful with it as if it doesn't get good airflow it's gotta be close to 85C inside that thing... which is probably the upper limit of the capacitors in it.
I do think Manufacturers will make changes when there is a clear problem. My last top before Inspirion was a Compal built Compaq R3000 which I though was a much better built (RIP - it died before it's time) than my current Dell unit ...but the power jack on that one was sketchy and had to be plugged in just right...and this was a known issue on those. Later revision had a redesigned plug with two prongs like an airplane headphone set that was tougher than anything I've seen since.
BTW - people want reliability but many are willing to take a gamble on a slightly cheaper product that seems as good for a smaller price. I.E. Hyundai, Vostro with a 8600GT...
Speaking of that... it's time for laptop replacement again and I've narrowed down to Vostro with 1500 or Asus with a HD2600...even though I didn't like my current dell all that much...price matters... anyway - where did all the sales go... was about to pull the trigger and Newegg jacked the Asus price a bill and Vostro with a 2 GHz CPU and 8600 is like over $900
now... you kids behave now... before somebody gets mad and hires a lawyer for libel... and you guys wonder why we have lawyers ... can't we all just get along

In this example, if people are using lawn darts for purposes not originally intended, how is that the responsibility of the manufacturer? Shouldn't people be held liable for their own actions? If someone throws a lawn dart straight up in the air and it punctures their skull, how is the manufacturer to blame?
Oh....right, it's far too easy to blame someone else for your own ignorance than own up to it. -
So what's the point of this thread? Do you want to start a Class Action Suit or are you just trying to revive the issue from the other thread? Do you have a specific complaint about an ongoing problem with a Dell product?
-
You lost me at "maybe"....
-
I think this thread should be closed. The other thread is perfectly fine for this garbage.
-
What exactly are you suing them for? The power supply? The motherboard? The AC adapter? The grainy screens? The headphone buzz? The CPU whine? Should I go on?
There's always a person on these boards threatens a lawsuit against company XYZ every other day. -
I vow to sue the next person who starts one of these lame-assed threads!

^On what grounds?

Anyone want to sue all lawyers for turning people into litigious scum? Call me.
-
P.S. In case someone is going to bring it up, that was partly serious and partly facetious.
-
Seriously, are we doing this again?
Regardless of whatever hardware faults, real or perceived, nobody wants a class action lawsuit.
Close the thread and let's all draw a line under it. -
Thread closed.
Threads like this one(and the other one that was also closed) are not productive and quickly turn "ugly". Do not create another thread on this subject.
